Join our innovative Regional Specialist FES Clinic and make a real difference to the lives of children and young adults with neurological conditions. This exciting 12-month opportunity will see you providing highly specialist Paediatric Neurological Physiotherapy expertise, assessing and managing patients for Functional Electrical Stimulation (FES) treatment and working collaboratively with regional specialist services, including orthotics.

You will lead on the assessment, planning, delivery and coordination of individualised treatment programmes, applying advanced clinical reasoning, evidence-based practice and established FES pathways to maximise rehabilitation outcomes.

Working closely with the Service Lead, you will contribute to the ongoing development of the service, participate in audit and research activities, and support the dissemination of knowledge and best practice in FES and rehabilitation. The role also offers valuable opportunities to collaborate with national FES services and help shape the future of specialist paediatric neurorehabilitation.

All FES training will be provided.

Main duties of the job
Provide highly specialist assessment and treatment for children and young adults with complex neurological conditions referred to the Regional Specialist FES Clinic. Manage a clinical caseload, delivering evidence-based FES interventions and coordinating rehabilitation programmes with local and regional services. Assess, prescribe and monitor FES equipment, ensuring safe and effective use by patients and carers. Set patient-centred goals and provide expert advice, education and ongoing support to patients, families and healthcare professionals. Work collaboratively with multidisciplinary teams and specialist services, including orthotics, to deliver high-quality, coordinated care. Maintain accurate clinical records, outcome measures and service activity data in line with professional and organisational standards. Contribute to safeguarding, risk management and the delivery of safe, effective patient care. Support the education and development of colleagues, students and wider healthcare professionals. Contribute to service development, audit, research and quality improvement activities, helping to advance FES practice and rehabilitation outcomes. Deputise for the FES Service Lead when required and contribute to the leadership and continuous improvement of the service.

  • Grad Dip Phys / Diploma in Physiotherapy / Physiotherapy Degree
  • Evidence of relevant CPD

Experience
Essential

  • Varied comprehensive rotations at junior grade.
  • Significant experience as a Peadiatric Physiotherapist - working with children with neurological conditions, managing symptoms e.g. spasticity and using current treatment methods within the NHS
  • Significant experience of assessing complex disability including children/ young adults with brain injury, spinal cord injury and progressive neurological disorders.


Desirable

  • Experience in adult neurology and management of symptoms e.g. spasticity


Skills
Essential

  • Knowledge and understanding of the paediatric rehabilitation process.
  • Proven highly skilled ability to assess and treat children/ young adults with neurological conditions, using clinical reasoning
  • Understanding of community support agencies and other professions, and ability to work and liaise with them.
  • Knowledge of orthotic interventions and ability to evaluate effect on gait.
  • Basic computer skills - Microsoft packages.
  • Evidence of good organisational skills including prioritisation of workload and time management skills, and ability to work independently.
  • Ability to demonstrate sound knowledge and application of up to date clinical trends, practices and models used in the treatment of children/ young adults with neurological conditions, using evidence based practice.
  • Ability to demonstrate knowledge of Clinical Governance, standard setting, the audit process and evidence-based practice (understanding of principles of clinical governance).
  • Ability to demonstrate individual responsibility in Health and Safety.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with paediatric/young adult patients/parents/carers/colleagues and other agencies, which may include sensitive and/or contentious information. This may require explanation, instruction, persuasion, motivation, negotiation, reassurance and require expert verbal and non-verbal skills. Use of simple and more complex communication technology may be used by patients and interpreters may be used on occasions. May need to convey sensitive and/or contentious information to clients and carers.
  • Demonstrates ability to work effectively in a team
  • Ability to generate written communication, which is relevant, concise, accurate and legible.
  • Ability to manually handle patients and/or equipment safely to attain positioning necessary to perform safe and effective clinical assessments and treatments.
  • Ability to demonstrate highly developed manual and palpatory skills, physiotherapeutic handling and positioning skills, gait re-education and exercise programme development skills for children/young adults with neurological problems.
  • Understanding of Functional Electrical Stimulation (FES) & clinical indications for its use (formal training desirable but not essential)
  • Ability to use cognitive, behavioural and communication strategies to ensure optimal treatment outcomes and rehabilitation goals are met.
  • Presentation skills, including the use of PowerPoint.
  • Participation in clinic audits.

  • Knowledge of use of augmentative aids to communication.
  • Knowledge of wheelchair assessment and postural management.
  • Ability to demonstrate knowledge of current legislative changes affecting the NHS especially those relevant to physiotherapy.
