Job summary
This is a BANK opportunity. Shift availability demand dependent. No guarantee of minimum number of hours. As this is a Bank position the successful candidate(s) will already be experienced in ASD diagnostics.

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Bank SLT/OT to join the Specialist Children and Young People's Services (SCYPS) in Newham to undertake ASD diagnostic assessments.

This post sits within the Child Development Service, working in the CHAND (CHildren with Autism in Newham Diagnosis) team.

We are looking to recruit an enthusiastic, forward thinking practitioner with experience of Neurodevelopmental Conditions with an interest in ASD to join our Staff BANK.

The post holder will undertake ASD assessment working in partnership with the wider multi disciplinary team.

The post holder will contribute to or lead multi-professional assessments of neurodevelopmental conditions in children and young people Providing specialist advice across professional boundaries and develop streamlined patient care pathways between nursing, GP's and paediatricians, setting up shared care arrangements for each child as appropriate. Assessment outcomes will be discussed and agreed with patients, carers and other health care professionals, promoting health education and self-management whilst keeping the child, young person and family at the centre of all care.

This role requires working at any clinical location in Newham

Main duties of the job
To provide a highly specialist assessment and diagnostic service in the CHAND team: To deliver highly specialist clinical services to children across the age range, as part of a multidisciplinary team, for assessment and diagnosis of Autism and related disorders.

To work independently, as part of a team, and across teams, in partnership with parents, education, social care, voluntary and other health professionals to provide ASD diagnostics for clients, their families, carers and educators.

To provide advice to parents and professionals on creating supportive communication environments to enable the young people to access information and to understand the interventions being offered.

Job responsibilities
In the CHAND Service, you will work with other members of the MDT to assess a range of children, referred for autism diagnostic assessments. You will undertake ADOS assessments (training will be provided), contribute to the diagnostic discussion and develop skills around autism history taking. You will also be required to deliver parent workshops pre and post diagnosis.

To provide highly specialist, autonomous clinical case management including highly specialist ASD assessments, adapting practice to meet individual clients circumstances, overcoming any barriers to understanding.

To write comprehensive reports to be shared with families and a range of professionals, reflecting specialist knowledge in line with department guidance.

Education/Qualifications
Essential

  • Recognised Speech and Language Therapy Degree Qualification or equivalent if OT
  • Health and Care Professions Council - Licence to Practice
  • Evidence of Masters or equivalent level of specialist training/short courses/specific training
  • Continued Professional Development Portfolio including evidence of reflective practice, in-service training, courses attended and experience gained


Desirable

  • Membership of relevant Clinical Excellence Network
  • ADOS trained
  • Registered Member of Royal College of Speech and Language Therapy or equivalent if OT


Knowledge & Skills
Essential

  • Highly Specialist knowledge of assessment tools and therapeutic interventions relevant to client groups and settings and an ability to compare and contrast relative benefits underpinned by evidence based practice
  • Knowledge and delivery of early intervention
  • A working knowledge of relevant procedures and legal frameworks e.g. SEND and to demonstrate the ability to apply this knowledge to clinical practice, including: Safeguarding Children, Code of Practice, Information Governance and other legal frameworks
  • Knowledge of the principles of clinical governance, including reflective practice, audit and research methodologies
  • Knowledge of the roles of other professionals and the principles of partnership working with key professionals in health, education, voluntary and social services
  • Knowledge and experience of clinical supervision and the ability to engage others in reflective practice
  • Ability to engage and negotiate with carers, clients and others around individual case management
  • Ability to use ICT for clinical and administrative tasks
  • Ability to communicate complex, sensitive condition related information from assessment to clients, carers, families and members of the multi-disciplinary team/other professions. This may include those who are under stress and/or have severely challenging communication difficulties
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills, both written and verbal
  • Able to use interpreters appropriately, ensuring equity of service provision to a multi-cultural population
