Job description

Principal Safety Consultant – Role

We are looking for a Principal Safety Consultant to join our team. As a leader, you will guide safety engineering and assurance services across a range of rail engineering projects, support junior consultants, and lead the development of safety protocols, risk assessment methodologies, and project quality.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead complex rail safety engineering and assurance services, applying methods aligned with standards such as EN50126, EN50129, IEC 61508, CSM-RA, and the Railways Interoperability Regulations.
  • Lead certification and authorisation projects for new railway stations, assessing National Technical Specification Notices, Infrastructure and PRM, and National Technical Rules such as GIRT7020 and GIRT7073.
  • Lead bidding, winning and delivery of commercially viable projects, collaborating with clients to align objectives and outcomes.
  • Contribute to safety assurance, approvals and CSM work for major infrastructure projects, e.g. National Train Control Centre in Dublin, Crewe Hub remodelling, and the East Coast Mainline.
  • Provide support to contractors for CSM and approvals on station and civil works.
  • Work on global projects in Australia, the US, Canada, Asia and the Middle East, and contribute remotely from the UK.
  • Demonstrate flexibility by managing multiple activities and balancing workloads across projects.
  • Lead interactive workshops with clients and stakeholders.

Key Competencies and Experience

  • Experience delivering safety engineering and assurance services to rail projects using standards such as CSM-RA and RIR.
  • Background in risk management, systems engineering, safety engineering and interoperability.
  • Preferably with a civil engineering background.
  • Prior experience on major rail infrastructure projects, particularly within the UK or in the consultancy sector.
  • Experience in railway station projects, track and civil works, gauging and structure assessments.
  • Exceptional organisational and prioritisation skills.
  • Ability to support business development by writing proposals and developing client relationships.
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to work effectively in a team.
  • Experience in cyber‑security is desirable but not essential for this role.

Benefits

  • Hybrid working policy: work from home up to two days a week; modern office collaboration across the UK.
  • Work‑life balance initiatives: “WSP My Hour”, flexible working and part‑time options, additional leave, and use of bank holidays.
  • Inclusivity & belonging: diversity‑friendly culture, employee resource groups, and a supportive work environment.
  • Health & wellbeing: Thrive programme, Virtual GP service, menopause support, gymflex scheme, workplace adjustments.
  • Professional development: training, mentoring, and opportunities for Chartership.

We positively encourage applications from suitably qualified and eligible candidates, regardless of sex, race, disability, age, sexual orientation, gender reassignment, religion or belief, marital status, pregnancy or maternity/paternity. We will interview all disabled applicants who meet the essential criteria and can arrange workplace adjustments for those who require them.
