Job summary
We are looking for enthusiastic and talented consultants to join our team to develop and deliver excellent care to our local population. The department offers a supportive and encouraging environment in which to develop as a professional.

Following a period of time where the oral surgery service was paused, we are delighted to be able not to reopen the service for both adult and paediatric patients.

We are seeking to recruit a team directly employed by Stockport NHS Foundation Trust.

This post has been created to support the reopening of oral surgery at Stockport Foundation Trust, following a pause in the service.

The service is now ready to reopen and will be located in our new outpatient building with a dedicated team of dental nurses.

The appointed candidate is expected to be fully competent to deal with a spectrum of oral surgery patients, there is no on call for this service at the current time.

Main duties of the job
The appointment to this post has two main aims:
  • To join a new team that provides consultant led patient-centred management of Oral Surgical conditions.
  • To be a part of developing the service to deliver maximum impact to improve the wait times and experience of patients requiring oral surgery.

The appointee will be expected to share responsibility for the delivery of high-quality care to the patients presenting to the Department.
  • To provide direct care to patients in both outpatient and day case sessions.
  • To advise junior colleagues as required.

The specific aims and responsibilities of this post.
The appointment to this post has two main aims:
  • To join a new team that provides consultant led patient-centred management of Oral Surgical conditions.

Clinical
The appointee will be expected to share responsibility for the delivery of high-quality care to the patients presenting to the Department.
  • To provide direct care to patients in both outpatient and day case sessions.
  • To advise junior colleagues as required.

Teaching/Training (as agreed with Clinical Director)
To participate in the undergraduate teaching programme.

To assist and participate with the development of staff as appropriate.

Where agreed, to act as Educational Supervisor to junior and middle grade medical staff, being responsible for their appraisal and personal development planning.

Audit (as agreed with Clinical Director)
To promote evidence-based practice. To respond appropriately to NICE guidance. To undertake and supervise relevant clinical audit topics

To be involved in risk management and quality assurance.

To remain up to date and engaged in CME/CPD as per RCS guidelines.

To respond appropriately to complaints and critical incidents.

The post holder will be expected to take part in developing clinical audit in accordance with agreed Directorate and Corporate Clinical Governance programmes. These build on the considerable progress already made by the Trust in clinical audit and continuous quality improvement.

Clinical Governance
To undertake all work in accordance with Stepping Hill Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust procedures and operating policies.

To attend accredited conferences and meetings to update personal level of clinical practice, teaching and management skills in line with CME/CPD requirements.

To participate in an annual Job Planning Review process.

To participate in the Trusts annual Appraisal process and to respond to any identified development needs.

To adhere to the Trusts Adverse Clinical Incident Policy.

Management (as agreed with Clinical Director)
To provide medical information for the development of systems appropriate for Trust needs

To participate in departmental consultant and senior staff meetings whilst remaining within the framework of the agreed strategy of the Trust and the Department

To attend other departmental, Divisional and Trust meetings as necessary

To attend regional and national meetings as necessary

To undertake all work in accordance with Trust procedures and operating policies

Teamwork
To work within the framework of team decisions.

To take a whole system to working with the wider health community

To show initiative, enthusiasm and flexibility

2 Speciality Doctors
1 Jnr Clinical Fellow
Team of Dental Nurses

(iii) Accreditation
Prospective candidates for this position should possess both parts of the appropriate higher surgical qualifications or its equivalent and have spent at least five years in accredited training in General Surgery. The appointee will be on the Specialist Register of the GDC or eligible for inclusion on the list within 6 months of the date of interview.

(v) This post is offered on a part-time basis.

Duties of the Post
The general clinical duties would be shared on an equal basis with the appointed team and include all duties normally expected in the management of oral surgery patients. Duties will be based at Stepping Hill.

Indicative Job plan
The contract will be offered at 10PAs.

This is an indicative plan to allow the appointee to commence work, and a formal plan will be agreed within three months of appointment.

Organisation of Surgical Administration
There is a well-established clinical directorate in Stockport. The Clinical Director at present is Mr Hamza Anwar, Consultant Orthodontist.

The Trust is committed to ensuring that newly appointed consultant staff are given appropriate support within their role. This includes opportunities for the post holder to access appropriate clinical/peer mentoring.

The post holder should discuss opportunities for mentoring with their Clinical Director; this will ensure that the support available best meets the post holders individual needs.

The Clinical Director is accountable to the Associate Medical Director, for the business group, Ms Natasha Henley

The Associate Medical Director is accountable to the Chief Executive of the Stockport NHS Trust.

The Director of the Surgery and Critical Care business group is Karen Hatchell who is also the budget holder.

Academic.
The Trust has a positive attitude towards and encourages participation of its consultants in continuing professional development, to which the Trust provides time and funding for this purpose. The appointee is expected to participate in CPD and fulfil College requirements.

Teaching
The hospital undertakes clinical teaching of medical undergraduates from Manchester and students may visit any of the surgical departments on an ad hoc basis. This has helped to establish and maintain close links with the Medical School.

The successful candidate will be expected to offer teaching to junior doctors, medical students and other health professionals within the Trust as well as contributing to clinical meetings. From time to time the appointee may be asked to teach other professional groups.

The Integrated Education Centre has greatly enhanced the postgraduate education facilities. Many lunchtime meetings are held at present, in which the appointee would be expected to take a full and active part.

Essential
  • Full registration with GDC
  • Appropriate higher oral surgery qualifications
  • Entry onto the GDC specialist register or in receipt of CCST within 6 months of interview
  • Specialist Registrar year 5/6 Oral Surgery
  • Membership of appropriate professional society

Desirable
  • Evidence of Specialist development in oral surgery
  • Evidence of recent (within last 2 years) independent or supervised research, papers and publications. Higher degree

Skills
Essential
  • Trained at specialist registrar or equivalent
  • Ability to train/supervise junior staff and medical students
  • Membership of appropriate professional society
  • Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing
  • Ability to form good professional relationships with all departments
  • Ability to work as a team with professional colleagues both medical and non medical

Desirable
  • Evidence of specialist development in oral surgery
  • Understanding of managerial responsibility and its future development in the role of clinicians in management

Experience
Essential
  • Experience of supervision of junior medical staff and relevant staff in other disciplines
  • Awareness of the managerial role of a Consultant in the NHS
  • Knowledge of the principles of clinical governance
  • Wide experience in oral surgery and able to deal with both emergency and elective oral surgery conditions
