As a consultant radiologist at The Christie, the post holder will be an oncological radiologist with experience in all aspects of cancer imaging, expertise in body cross sectional image reporting (CT, MRI, US plus or minus PET CT), and chairing of cancer MDTs.

The department currently supports 23 disease related clinical Multidisciplinary Team Meetings (MDTMs). Each MDT has a lead consultant and the meetings are covered by rota of between three and five consultants. The post holder will be expected to contribute to at least 2 MDT meetings and to develop subspecialty interest in these disease areas. The MDT consultant rotas are reviewed annually to meet the MDT peer review requirements and provide an appropriate distribution of workload and case mix.

Supporting professional activities

The agreed job plan will include all of the consultants professional duties and commitments, to include agreed supporting professional activities (SPA). The Christie NHS Foundation Trust supports the identification of 2.5 SPA for full-time employees to include audit, CPD, teaching and research and commits to manage this in a high trust, low bureaucracy fashion. The exact timing and location of SPA, and flexibility around these, will be agreed with the Clinical Director and be included in the prospective job plan, subject to annual review and appraisal. It will be expected that output for the SPA will be accountable and productive with supporting evidence of outcomes.

On-call and Emergency duties

The post holder will be included on the on-call rota. This is currently 1:26. There is an on-call Specialist Trainee, so that consultants are not routinely required to attend the hospital, but are called in where necessary for simple intervention, review of complex CT and for MR of spinal cord compression.

The department plays an active role within the North West School of Radiology, in particular with regard to subspecialty training in Oncological Radiology. Medical student, SHO/FY2 and non-radiology registrar teaching is also supported.

Research is encouraged and supported by an active Research and Development Committee and a Division of Research and Development. The appointee will be encouraged to develop research interests where appropriate and be expected to support colleagues engaged in research projects. The Trust has recently entered into a commitment with the University of Manchester to develop the Manchester Cancer Research Centre which will offer additional opportunities for future translational research.

Continuing Professional Development (CPD)

The Trust supports the requirements for CPD as laid down by the GMC and royal colleges and is committed to providing time and financial support for these activities.

Job Planning

The job plan outlines the requirements of the post and may be altered by joint agreement with the Divisional Clinical Director and Service Manager and in response to service needs. Job Plans are prospectively agreed subject to an annual individual job plan review (May September). It is expected that the initial Job Plan discussion will take place within the first six months of employment at the Trust and then be aligned to the Trusts annual Job Planning review cycle.

The annual review will examine all aspects of the job plan (including any educational and supervision components) and will also include an assessment of professional development with defined goals for the future. For more information refer to the Terms and Conditions section of this Job Description and also the Trusts Job Planning Policy.

Essential Training/Mandatory Training

To ensure you maintain safe practice and understand Trust requirements, you must ensure your essential/mandatory training modules are maintained at all times using allocated core SPA time to complete them.

Job Plan Timetable

It is the requirement of the Trust that all new consultant colleagues must have 0.25 SPAs within their job plan to support Trust appraisal and supervision requirements. This can either be as appraiser or a supervisor for medical staff or Advanced clinical Practitioners.
