Job description

A Salaried GP works as an autonomous practitioner, responsible for the provision of medical services to the practice population, delivering an excellent standard of clinical care while complying with the contract. Furthermore, the post-holder will adhere to the GMC standards for good medical practice, contributing to the effective management of the practice, leading by example, maintaining a positive, collaborative working relationship with the multidisciplinary team. The role is to support, mentor, and supervise other healthcare professionals within the organisation and be an integral part of the general practice team.

In addition to the primary responsibilities, the Salaried GP has the following wider responsibilities:

  • Participate in the spectrum of clinical governance processes
  • Participate in formal training events promoting best practice in area of expertise. Provide leadership and education for members of the multi-disciplinary team, providing guidance and support when necessary
  • Participate in local initiatives to enhance service delivery and patient care

Main duties of the job

Deliver high-quality, patient-centred medical care in line with the primary care contract. Assess patients' physical and psychological needs, plan appropriate care, and refer to other services when required. Prescribe in accordance with local and national guidance, prioritise and manage acute, urgent and long-term conditions, and provide emergency care when necessary. Promote health, prevention and self-management. Complete referrals, prescriptions and administrative tasks promptly. Review medications in line with NICE, local guidelines and care pathways. Maintain accurate clinical records and work collaboratively to share workload effectively. Adhere to clinical guidelines, audits, practice policies and governance standards. Support anticipatory care planning, quality improvement initiatives, QOF and delegated responsibilities. Contribute to practice meetings, service development, training and multidisciplinary working. Comply with safeguarding legislation, appraisal, revalidation and continuing professional development requirements. Follow practice protocols, promote collaborative working and continuous improvement, support the wider primary care network, and undertake additional duties appropriate to service needs and staffing requirements.

About us

We are a small and friendly GP practice located in Long Eaton, with excellent access to Nottingham or Derby or further afield, with junction 25 of the M1 being less than 2 miles away.

We pride ourselves on being a well‑established training practice providing general medical services for our practice list of 5800 patients. This is a rewarding and varied role for a GP who shares our ethos of providing patient centred care and is motivated to maintain and improve our high QOF achievement and contribute to the development of the organisational and business aspect of the Practice.

We are a fully computerised Practice, using TPP SystmOne and working towards becoming paper light. We have an integrated nursing team including a Nursing team, Health Care Assistant and an efficient and supportive administration team.

Job responsibilities

The following are the core responsibilities of the Salaried GP in delivering health services.

  • The delivery of highly effective medical care to the entitled population
  • The provision of services commensurate with the primary care contract
  • To clinically examine and assess patient needs from a physiological and psychological perspective and plan clinical care accordingly referring patients to other services/agencies in a timely manner, utilising Practice and any other local guidelines
  • Generic prescribing adhering to local and national guidance
  • Prioritise health problems and intervene appropriately to assist the patient in complex, urgent or emergency situations, including initiation of effective emergency care
  • Effective management of long-term conditions
  • To support patients to adopt health promotion strategies that promote healthy lifestyles and apply principles of self-care
  • Processing of administration in a timely manner, including referrals, repeat prescription requests and other associated administrative tasks
  • Review medications following the appropriate policies, NICE/local clinical guidelines and local care pathways
  • Maintain accurate clinical records in conjunction with good practice, policy and guidance
  • Work collaboratively, accepting an equal share of the practice workload
  • Adhere to best practice recommended through clinical guidelines and the audit process
  • Support the delivery of anticipatory care plans
  • Contribute to the successful implementation of continuous improvement and quality initiatives within the practice
  • Accept delegated responsibility for a specific area (or areas) or the QOF
  • Attend and contribute effectively to practice meetings as required
  • Contribute effective to the development and maintenance of the practice including clinical governance and training
  • Be aware of your duties and responsibilities regarding current legislation and adhere to practice policies and procedures on Safeguarding Adults and Safeguarding Children
  • Ensure compliance with the appraisal process
  • Prepare and complete the revalidation process to remain fit to practice
  • Commit to self-learning and instil an ethos of continuing professional development across the practice team
  • Review and always adhere to practice protocols and policies
  • Encourage collaborative working, liaising with all staff regularly, always promoting a culture of continuous improvement
  • To be an integral part of the general practice team as well as supporting the wider network and multi-disciplinary team
  • There may be, on occasion, a requirement to carry out other tasks; this will be dependent upon factors such as workload and staffing levels

Qualifications

  • Qualified GP
  • MRCGP
  • Vocational Training Certificate or equivalent JCPTGP
  • Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT)

Clinical knowledge and other skills

  • Outstanding level of clinical knowledge and skills commensurate with that of an experienced GP
  • Understanding of the importance of evidence-based practice
  • Good MS Office and clinical system IT knowledge
  • Understanding of the spectrum of clinical governance processes
  • Excellent communication skills (written and oral) including recording of accurate clinical notes
  • Ability to work within own scope of practice and understand when to refer to GP colleagues
  • Experience of triage and the ability to effectively assess and diagnose
  • Ability to listen whilst being honest and caring and be both sensitive and empathetic in distressing situations
  • Understanding of the local pathology tests processes and the ability to processing the results with advising patients accordingly
  • Ability to assess and manage acute deteriorations /exacerbations of long‑term conditions
  • Understanding of safeguarding adults and children
  • Understanding of the importance of evidence-based practice
  • Occupational health clearance
  • Flexibility to work outside of core office hours
  • Evidence of continuing professional development (CPD) commensurate with the role
  • Access to own transport and ability to travel across the locality on a regular basis
  • Knowledge of health promotion strategies
  • Experience of medicines management
  • Knowledge of public health issues in the local area
  • Understanding and knowledge of QOF and enhanced service

Experience

  • Ability to both work autonomously and as part of a multi-disciplinary team
  • Experience of working in a primary care environment
  • Experience of providing home visits
  • Minimum of two years as a salaried GP
  • General understanding of the primary care contract
  • Proven ability to evaluate the safety and effectiveness of own clinical practice
  • An appreciation of the NHS landscape and relationship between individual organisations, PCNs and the commissioners
