Job description

Senior Capital Actuary (Division)

AXA XL is an Equal Opportunity Employer.

London, UK

AXA XL is the Property & Casualty risk division of AXA, created from the acquisition of XL Catlin in 2018. We partner with mid-sized to multinational clients to take their business further, with more than 30 lines of business to offer solutions for existing and emerging risks. With 9,000+ colleagues based in approximately 30 countries we are able to serve clients in more than 200 countries.

This position is part of the AXA XL Risk Management team which is organized in several Centers of Excellence (Actuarial Risk, Underwriting Risk, Risk Governance and Control, Financial and Catastrophe Risk). This role is part of the Capital Modelling team of the Actuarial Risk Center of Excellence.

The Risk Management team is a strategic department within AXA XL dealing with the most difficult P&C challenges and influencing strategic decisions in operations of a leading international Commercial Lines and Reinsurance company.

This is a leadership role within the Divisional Capital Modelling team, combining deep technical expertise, people management and stakeholder engagement. The key purpose of this role is the development, governance and implementation of AXA XL's internal capital model, helping shape the future direction of capital modelling across the Division.

What you’ll be doing

What will your essential responsibilities include?

  • Core Responsibilities: Partner with the Head of Capital Modelling – Division in the development, maintenance and operation of our internal capital model. This includes overseeing the second line review of parameterisation processes, validation of model outputs, optimisation of model code and documentation, production and presentation of standard formula calculations (Solvency II and BSCR) results, and providing expert oversight of correlation modelling and other areas of expert judgement. Working closely with stakeholders across AXA XL and AXA Group, review and challenge model inputs, assumptions, methodologies and outputs, while ensuring the delivery of robust capital modelling outputs.
  • Continuous Improvement: Drive continuous improvement of our modelling approaches, processes, and technology implementation, identifying opportunities to improve efficiency, automation, analytical capability and model insight while fostering a culture of innovation and operational excellence.
  • People Management: Lead, develop and manage a team of three capital modellers, fostering a high-performing and collaborative team culture while supporting their technical growth, career development and long-term success within AXA XL. Provide technical leadership, coaching, challenge and constructive feedback, while ensuring the accuracy, reliability and regulatory compliance of capital modelling deliverables from the team.
  • Ceded Reinsurance: Lead the continued development of ceded reinsurance modelling within the internal capital model, enhancing the representation of complex reinsurance structures, improving insight into the capital impacts of reinsurance programmes, and supporting the development of capital modelling reporting on ceded reinsurance. Liaise with our ceded reinsurance team on the interpretation of contract terms and capital modelling outputs.
  • Model Use: Develop and enhance the internal capital model outputs provided to key stakeholders, ensuring they are fit for purpose and meet business requirements. Deliver capital modelling analyses to support actuarial investigations, risk second opinions and strategic initiatives, and lead ad hoc assessments of the Division's capital and risk profile to provide timely insight on emerging issues and business developments.
  • Stakeholder Engagement: Build strong relationships across AXA XL, coordinating data sourcing, timelines and priorities across multiple stakeholders, while supporting the operation of the internal model governance framework and associated committee processes.
  • Validation: Lead engagement with internal and external validation functions, representing the Capital Modelling team in discussions on methodologies, assumptions, processes and results. Drive the successful resolution of validation findings through effective challenge, stakeholder engagement and delivery of remediation plans.

You will report to Head of Capital Modelling – Division.

Our Pillars:

  • Valuing nature: How we impact nature affects how nature impacts us. Resilient ecosystems - the foundation of a sustainable planet and society – are essential to our future. We’re committed to protecting and restoring nature – from mangrove forests to the bees in our backyard – by increasing biodiversity awareness and inspiring clients and colleagues to put nature at the heart of their plans.
  • Addressing climate change: The effects of a changing climate are far-reaching and significant. Unpredictable weather, increasing temperatures, and rising sea levels cause both social inequalities and environmental disruption. We're building a net zero strategy, developing insurance products and services, and mobilizing to advance thought leadership and investment in societal-led solutions.
  • Integrating ESG: All companies have a role to play in building a more resilient future. Incorporating ESG considerations into our internal processes and practices builds resilience from the roots of our business. We’re training our colleagues, engaging our external partners, and evolving our sustainability governance and reporting.
  • AXA Hearts in Action: We have established volunteering and charitable giving programs to help colleagues support causes that matter most to them, known as AXA XL’s “Hearts in Action” programs.
