Job description

We are looking for enthusiastic and motivated people to join our busy post and portering team. As a member of this close-knit team, you will be responsible for portering tasks within the University. It's a busy and active role, with a lot of variety, across two busy campuses where you will be communicating with colleagues and students on a regular basis. During busy times, you can also further develop your skills by assisting the post team on our busy reception.

The job will include:

  • Helping to move goods, equipment, and supplies throughout the university
  • Delivering items to different departments or locations as needed
  • Responding to requests for furniture or equipment relocation within the premises
  • Ensuring the safe handling and transport of waste including furniture, electrical items, food recycling and confidential waste
  • Receiving, sorting and delivery of incoming and outgoing mail and parcels
  • Driving University vehicles

Work takes place in shifts between 07:00 and 17:00 Monday-Friday so you will need to be available and flexible to work within these times. A rota is released a week in advance to let you know when you will be working.

Additionally, there is an occasional requirement to work at the weekend, but this is limited to 5 weekends in total across the year.

About you

We are looking for candidates with:

  • Physical fitness to handle lifting and moving of heavy objects or equipment
  • Good communication skills and the ability to work well within a team
  • Willingness to learn and adapt to new tasks and responsibilities
  • Reliable and punctual with a strong work ethic
  • Flexibility and adaptability to switch between roles as needed

Previous experience in a portering role is advantageous but not mandatory, as we will provide you with full training.

Please note, a full UK driving licence is essential for this role.

What's in it for you?

We think Surrey is a great place to work. Our campus is a beautiful, leafy environment with the buzz of student life and superb working facilities. Our workplace offers a friendly and supportive atmosphere, with a focus on teamwork and collaboration. You will have the opportunity to work in a dynamic setting where no two days are the same.

Additionally, we offer:

  • A competitive salary
  • Market leading pension
  • Up to 40 days holiday: 25 days annual leave + 7 University Closure Days + Bank Holidays
  • Travel & family benefits including cycle to work scheme and on-site childcare
  • Access to on-site leisure facilities at discounted rates

How to apply

To apply please upload your CV and a cover letter to our website, letting us know why you would like to apply for this role.

The University is committed to providing an inclusive environment that offers equal opportunities for all. We place great value on diversity and are seeking to increase the diversity within our community. Therefore, we particularly encourage applications from under-represented groups, such as people from Black, Asian and minority ethnic groups and people with disabilities.
