Main duties of the job
Our 0-19 service is a collaborative, integrated team of Health Visitors, Public Health School Nurses, Community Staff Nurses, Nursery Nurses, School Health Workers and Nursing Associates, all working together to support children, young people and their families. We focus on early intervention, helping families build the skills and confidence to improve their own health and wellbeing. We work in partnership with social care, education and community services, delivering evidence-based care guided by the Healthy Child Programme. Through holistic assessments, we identify physical, emotional and social needs to provide personalised, family-centred support from pre-birth through to age 19.

With around 2 million contacts with patients every year, we deliver care from: Royal Victoria Infirmary (RVI), Freeman Hospital, Newcastle Dental Hospital, Cramlington Manor Walks, Urgent treatment centres, Newcastle Fertility Centre, Northern Centre for Cancer Care, North Cumbria, Northern Genetics Service. These include a range of flagship services which deliver cutting-edge care (supported by state-of-the-art diagnostic services in both radiology and pathology) and are a catalyst for innovation to support pioneering clinical practice in the NHS.

We also have offices at Regent Point in Gosforth and community sites.

Job responsibilities
School Health Community Staff Nurses work within small, locality-based teams linked to a group of schools, supported by a Team Lead and wider multidisciplinary staff. They deliver health assessments in school settings and provide a range of interventions, including targeted one-to-one support on areas such as behaviour, toileting, emotional wellbeing, sleep, healthy lifestyles and relationships. The role also involves delivering PSHE sessions on topics such as NSPCC Keeping Children Safe and puberty, running secondary school drop-in clinics, and leading health promotion initiatives for both pupils and parents.

School Health Community Staff Nurses play a key role in assessing and supporting Children in Care, Young Carers and other vulnerable or underserved groups, working directly with individuals to improve areas such as emotional wellbeing and healthy relationships. This is a varied and rewarding role within a fast-paced environment where no two days are the same.
  • Accountable for assessing, planning, delivering and evaluating high quality patient care
  • Provide effective support to both patient and carers throughout their care pathway: required to support a team of Health Visitor / Public Health School Nurse/Specialist Community Practitioner, assisting in the delivery of a family centred public health service to a defined population. Working with a multidisciplinary agency approach
  • To assist in the development of a local health needs profile, supporting and informing service in line with clinical governance framework
  • The post holder will participate in assessing risk and needs with individuals, families, groups and communities and then plan implement and evaluate interventions and support which will contribute to health and well-being
  • Act as role model, teacher and supervisor for junior staff and students, participating in mentor and preceptorship programmes
  • To abide by Trust policies and procedures
  • Provide support for and depending on experience deputise for nurse in charge in their absence
  • Act as patient advocate in accordance with Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) Code
  • Work collaboratively as an effective member of MDT

Person Specification
KNOWLEDGE
Essential
  • Has awareness of the Health Visiting / Public Health School Nurse role
  • Evidence of achievements and career development in current post and of on-going professional development
  • Awareness of current relevant NHS policy context
  • Has understanding / experience of adult / child safeguarding
  • Knowledge of current issues relating to Public Health
  • Understanding of health needs analysis
  • Understanding of the Healthy Child Programme (DH2009)

Desirable
  • Meets Nursing and Midwifery Council requirements for mentorship if relevant to role

SKILLS
Essential
  • Basic IT skills
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills
  • Effective record keeping
  • Effective organisational and time management skills
  • Valid driving licence and able to travel effectively and independently to multiple locations around the city in one day, whilst transporting equipment

Desirable
  • Relevant clinical skills relating to the specialty
  • Presentation skills
  • Ability to facilitate the development and supervision of colleagues and students

EXPERIENCE
Essential
  • Relevant and recent clinical experience

Desirable
  • Previous experience in speciality
  • Post registration experience
  • Working with paediatrics/community or with child and young people
  • Involvement in audit and research

QUALIFICATIONS
Essential
  • Registered Nurse (appropriate to branch)
  • Current NMC registration
  • Diploma/Degree in Nursing (completed or willingness to undertake) or equivalent experience

Desirable
  • Programme of study relevant to speciality
