Consultant Gastroenterologist

Full Time or Part Time Opportunity

Ilford Hospital

Managerial Accountability: Hospital Manager
Professional Accountability: Clinical Director for Gastroenterology

CHEC is an NHS provider organisation founded in 2012. Today, we are one of the UK's leading providers of community-based healthcare services, delivering high-quality Ophthalmology, Gastroenterology, ENT and Dermatology services across England.

The way we work together is guided by our core values: Caring, Passionate, Togetherness, Listening and Focus. These values underpin everything we do and help us deliver exceptional patient care and experience.

We are committed to maintaining the highest standards of patient care, with 99% of patients recommending our services to family and friends. We are proud of our state-of-the-art hospitals and clinics and continue to expand our services to improve access to specialist care for NHS patients.

Due to the continued growth of our Gastroenterology service, we are seeking an experienced Consultant Gastroenterologist to join our team. This role will be primarily based at our Ilford Hospital, supporting patients across Ilford and the South region. The successful candidate will play a key role in delivering consultant-led Gastroenterology services while contributing to the continued growth and development of CHEC's expanding community Gastroenterology service.

The post is predominantly Ilford-based, with occasional travel to other CHEC sites across the South region to support clinical service delivery, service development and clinical leadership initiatives.

Indicative Job Plan

CHEC operates a flexible and modifiable Consultant job planning model based on Programmed Activities (PAs).

An indicative full-time job plan of 10 PAs

Final job plans will be agreed with the Clinical Director and reviewed annually to reflect service requirements and individual interests.

What Will I Be Doing as a Consultant Gastroenterologist?

The successful candidate will provide high-quality Gastroenterology services to patients referred to CHEC, working closely with the multidisciplinary team to deliver exceptional clinical care and patient outcomes.

Responsibilities will include:

  • Delivering Consultant-led Gastroenterology outpatient clinics.
  • Assessing, diagnosing and managing patients referred to the service.
  • Undertaking diagnostic and therapeutic upper and lower GI endoscopy procedures.
  • Delivering a minimum expectation of two endoscopy lists per week.
  • Providing expert clinical advice and treatment recommendations.
  • Supporting the continued growth, delivery and development of CHEC's community-based Gastroenterology services.
  • Supporting the Clinical Director in the development, leadership and strategic direction of CHEC's Gastroenterology services.
  • Leading and contributing to clinical governance, audit, service evaluation and quality improvement initiatives.
  • Supporting the implementation of innovative clinical pathways and service developments.
  • Providing clinical leadership and expertise to multidisciplinary teams.
  • Supporting service delivery across CHEC sites within the South region when required.
  • Maintaining accurate and timely clinical documentation in line with organisational policies and GMC standards.
  • Working in accordance with CHEC clinical protocols, policies and values.

To Be Successful in This Role

To support our continued partnership with the NHS, we are looking for an experienced Consultant Gastroenterologist with a strong clinical background, excellent endoscopy skills and a commitment to delivering outstanding patient care.

Applicants will be expected to demonstrate:

  • A proven track record of delivering high-quality Gastroenterology services.
  • Significant experience in diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopy.
  • Excellent clinical judgement and decision-making skills.
  • A commitment to delivering excellent patient outcomes and experiences.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • The ability to work independently and effectively within a multidisciplinary team.
  • Experience of clinical governance, audit and continuous quality improvement.
  • An interest in service development and innovation.
  • The ability to provide clinical leadership and contribute strategically to service growth.
  • A flexible and collaborative approach to supporting services across the South region.

CHEC operates a flexible Consultant job planning model based on Programmed Activities. The successful candidate's job plan will be agreed with the Clinical Director upon appointment and reviewed annually to ensure alignment with service requirements, professional development goals and individual interests.

Person Specification

Essential

  • Medical degree (MBBS or equivalent).
  • Full GMC Registration with a licence to practise.
  • Entry on the GMC Specialist Register for Gastroenterology, or eligibility for entry within six months of appointment.
  • JAG accreditation (or equivalent recognised competency) in diagnostic and therapeutic upper and lower GI endoscopy.
  • Ability to independently perform upper and lower GI endoscopy procedures.
  • Broad training and experience in Gastroenterology.
  • Up-to-date knowledge of current clinical practice and evidence-based medicine.
  • Understanding of clinical governance, audit and quality improvement methodologies.
  • Evidence of ongoing Continuing Professional Development (CPD).
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Strong organisational, leadership and influencing skills.
  • Ability to work effectively within a multidisciplinary team.
  • Flexible, professional and patient-focused approach.
  • Ability and willingness to travel independently to support services across Ilford, the South region and other CHEC locations as required.

  • Experience in service development, transformation and innovation.
  • Experience of supporting clinical leadership teams or operational service development.
  • Teaching and training experience.
