Job summary
The Royal Wolverhampton NHS Trust is seeking an enthusiastic and forward-thinking Senior Pharmacist to join our Antimicrobial Stewardship (AMS) team , working in a joint role that also includes being a Academic Practitioner with the University of Birmingham.

This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced clinical pharmacist who is passionate about delivering high-quality patient care in fast-paced acute setting, while also shaping the next generation of pharmacists through teaching, supervision and academic leadership.

As a key member of the AMS team, you will provide advanced clinical pharmacy services . You will work as an independent prescriber, contribute to multidisciplinary ward rounds, and lead on antibiotic optimisation for complex and acutely unwell patients.

Alongside your clinical responsibilities, you will hold a practitioner role within the School of Pharmacy & Life Sciences. You will contribute to undergraduate and postgraduate teaching, support clinical placements, supervise students, and participate in scholarly activity that enhances the academic profile of the School.

This dual role offers an excellent balance of frontline clinical practice, education, research and service development.

Main duties of the job
  • Provide specialist support and advice to all grades of healthcare professionals, patients and/or their carers on prudent antimicrobial use, including the clinical- and cost-effective choice of antimicrobial agent, prescribing, and administration and monitoring requirements.
  • Support the Principal Pharmacist for AMS to deliver highly specialist training regarding AMS and AMR to pharmacy colleagues, nursing staff, medical staff and students within the Trust.
  • Support the Principal Pharmacist for AMS to ensure all trust guidelines, policies and procedures and the antimicrobial formulary are regularly reviewed and updated in line with the latest clinical evidence and national guidance
  • Provide clinical pharmacy services to wards, departments and Outpatient Parenteral Antibiotic Therapy (OPAT) clinics
  • Attend regular AMS and antifungal stewardship (AFS) ward rounds
  • To work as non-medical Independent Prescriber (NMP) (if qualified) within scope of clinical knowledge and competence to support safe prescribing and administration of medicines.

Applicants must be registered with the GPhC, have comprehensive experience as a clinical pharmacist in a hospital setting, have comprehensive experience of supervising/ training/ assessing students or staff, and have a postgraduate diploma in clinical pharmacy or equivalent.

Essential
  • Significant post-registration experience working recently in an Acute Trust setting.
  • Experience in supervising, training and assessing staff
  • Ability to analyse and resolve highly complex situations, and able to provide expert advice when required.
  • Ability to achieve targets and tight deadlines

Desirable
  • Experience of working as part of the pharmacy team within the AMS Speciality
  • Previous experience of supervising, training and assessing staff, or leading an aspect of an education programme
  • Excellent leadership skills
  • Networking skills, disseminating good practice both regionally and nationally.
  • Ability to enthuse and engage multidisciplinary teams to include consultant clinicians, accountants, and finance managers as well as pharmacy staff

Qualification
Essential
  • Registered Pharmacist with the GPhC
  • Postgraduate clinical diploma or equivalent qualification/accreditation (e.g. RPS Newly Qualified Pharmacist Pathway)

Desirable
  • Independent prescribing qualification
