Job description
Job summary
This is a full time appointment for a Trust Grade Doctor in Oculoplastics based within the Ophthalmology Department at Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust. The post will be available from November 2026 for a period of 12 months.

The successful candidate will join the Oculoplastics team in delivering specialist care for patients with oculoplastic, lacrimal and orbital conditions. The role includes outpatient assessment and management, elective and emergency theatre sessions, ward reviews where appropriate, and participation in the ophthalmology on-call rota. In keeping with our role as a leading teaching hospital, there will also be opportunities to contribute to undergraduate and postgraduate education, clinical audit, quality improvement, research and service development.

Main duties of the job
Join the Oculoplastics service at Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust, one of the UK's largest and most progressive teaching hospitals, as a Trust Grade Doctor based at St James's University Hospital. Working within a highly experienced multidisciplinary team alongside consultant oculoplastic surgeons, you will contribute to the delivery of specialist oculoplastic services across outpatient clinics, theatre sessions and on-call care, while also having opportunities to participate in teaching, research and service development.

We are looking for a motivated and enthusiastic ophthalmologist with experience in oculoplastics, excellent clinical and surgical skills, and a commitment to delivering outstanding patient-centred care. This is an excellent opportunity for a post-CCT doctor or senior trainee wishing to further develop their subspecialty expertise in a supportive teaching environment that values collaboration, innovation and continuous professional development.

Trust Doctor in the department of Ophthalmology
The post is based at St James's University Hospital, Leeds, within one of the UK's largest and busiest ophthalmology departments. Applicants should have established skills in the assessment and management of oculoplastic conditions. Experience of independent outpatient practice and theatre work is desirable. We are looking for an excellent communicator with a collaborative approach, a commitment to high-quality patient care, and enthusiasm for teaching and service improvement.

What you will bring to the role
We are looking for a motivated and enthusiastic ophthalmologist who is committed to delivering high-quality, patient-centred care. The successful candidate will have:
  • FRCOphth (or equivalent) and at least four years of higher specialist training (or equivalent).
  • Full GMC registration with a licence to practise by the intended start date.
  • Experience in oculoplastics and the ability to manage a broad range of oculoplastic conditions.
  • Excellent clinical judgement and a commitment to maintaining high standards of patient care.
  • The ability to work effectively within a multidisciplinary team and build strong working relationships with colleagues across specialties.
  • Experience of working in outpatient clinics, operating theatres and acute ophthalmology services.
  • An interest in teaching, training and supporting the development of junior colleagues.
  • A commitment to research, quality improvement and service development.
  • Excellent communication, organisational and decision-making skills.
  • A professional, flexible and collaborative approach that reflects the values of Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust.
