Job description

Looking for a varied, hands-on maintenance role where your work helps create a safe, welcoming and well-maintained environment for children and families? As a Maintenance Assistant at Robin House, you’ll help provide a comprehensive buildings, grounds and equipment maintenance service, supporting the smooth running of the hospice every day.

Working as part of the maintenance team, you’ll support a wide range of practical tasks across the hospice and grounds - from minor repairs, routine inspections and DIY tasks, to helping maintain equipment, vehicles, pathways, outdoor areas and the hydrotherapy pool.

This is a varied and practical role where no two days are the same. You’ll work alongside staff, volunteers, contractors and external suppliers, helping to ensure Robin House remains safe, pleasant and tidy for children and young people with life-shortening conditions, their families, staff, volunteers and visitors.

About You

To be successful in this role, you will have skills and experience in the following areas:

  • Practical experience in a multi-skilled building maintenance role, with experience across areas such as mechanical, electrical, plumbing, carpentry, painting and decorating.
  • Relevant training, qualifications or equivalent practical knowledge and experience to support a hands-on maintenance role.
  • Working knowledge of health and safety legislation and safe systems of work in a building maintenance environment.
  • A friendly, professional and courteous approach, with experience of working in a public-facing or sensitive environment.
  • A positive “can do” attitude, with the ability to take responsibility for your own work and decisions within agreed procedures.
  • A commitment to working constructively with volunteers and supporting them to work safely.
  • A current, valid driving licence.

About CHAS

At CHAS, we support families across Scotland who are living with the heartbreak that their child is dying. Our teams work together to create moments of joy and provide care, compassion and practical support when it matters most.

As a Maintenance Assistant, you will play an important part in this. The environment you help maintain directly supports the comfort, safety and experience of children, families, staff, volunteers and visitors at Robin House.

Working at CHAS means being part of a supportive, collaborative team where your practical skills make a real difference every day.

We offer

  • Meaningful work: a hands-on role where the work you do helps create a safe, welcoming and well-maintained environment for children and families.
  • A supportive team environment: working alongside a dedicated team of staff and volunteers across Robin House.
  • Varied work: the opportunity to support buildings, grounds, equipment, vehicles, contractors, room set-ups and general hospice maintenance.
  • Development opportunities: the chance to build your skills across a varied estate and learn through a broad range of maintenance and compliance activity.
  • Pension: membership of the Local Government Pension Scheme and, where eligible, the opportunity to continue contributing to an existing NHS pension scheme.
  • Generous annual leave: 35 days, increasing to 40 days after 5 years’ service; where applicable, recognition of NHS service and enhanced entitlement up to 40 days.
  • Health and wellbeing support: access to HSF employee benefits and wellbeing support services.
  • Exclusive discounts: access to Blue Light Card and other staff discount schemes.
