Job description

CORE PURPOSE

We are seeking an empathetic, strategic Special Educational Needs Coordinator (SENCO) to lead and oversee the delivery of special educational needs provision across our school. Operating within a dedicated specialist primary setting, the successful candidate will manage Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP) reviews, coordinate multi-agency provision, support teaching staff with high-leverage adaptive strategies, and ensure every pupil receives tailored support to achieve their full potential.

THE SCHOOL

A specialist primary SEN school (Ages 3–11) located in the London Borough of Ealing, West London, catering to pupils with severe learning difficulties (SLD), Autism Spectrum Condition (ASC), and complex communication needs. The school operates with structured, trauma-informed practices managed in close alignment with senior leadership and multi-agency health teams. The inclusion department functions within a calm, sensory-adapted environment using modern digital tools to ensure annual reviews, EHCP compliance, and parent communications run seamlessly.

KEY TASKS & DAILY OPERATIONS

  • Strategic Provision & Compliance: Lead the development, implementation, and evaluation of the school’s SEN strategy, ensuring full compliance with the SEND Code of Practice and statutory obligations.

  • EHCP & Annual Review Management: Coordinate and chair EHCP annual reviews, liaising closely with local authority SEN caseworkers, parents, carers, and external agencies.

  • Multi-Agency Leadership: Work collaboratively with speech and language therapists, occupational therapists, educational psychologists, and paediatric health teams to design and implement holistic support plans.

  • Staff Guidance & Training: Provide high-quality professional development and coaching to primary teachers and support staff on adaptive teaching, sensory integration, and positive behaviour support.

  • Data & Progress Tracking: Monitor and evaluate the academic, social, and developmental progress of pupils with SEN, utilizing specialist digital assessment tools to adjust intervention strategies effectively.

PROFILE REQUIREMENTS

  • Qualifications: Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) and the National Award for SEN Co-ordination (NASENCO) / NPQ for SENCOs (or willingness to complete within statutory timelines).

  • Experience: Proven track record of successful teaching and SEN leadership, preferably within a specialist primary setting, special school, or mainstream inclusion department.

  • Skills: Expert knowledge of the SEND Code of Practice, exceptional organizational skills, high emotional intelligence, and strong leadership capabilities.

REGIONAL CONTEXT

  • Local Area & Community: Based in the vibrant West London borough of Ealing, the school serves a diverse and supportive suburban community. Known as the "Queen of the Suburbs," Ealing combines bustling commercial centres, historic architecture, expansive green spaces such as Walpole Park and Ealing Common, and an engaged network of local families.

  • Transport & Commuting: The school benefits from outstanding regional transport links, with direct road connections via the A40 (Western Avenue), A406 (North Circular), and M4 corridor. Public transit connectivity is exceptional, featuring extensive local bus routes, Elizabeth line services, and Central and District line Underground links via stations such as Ealing Broadway, West Ealing, and Ealing Common, providing swift routes across West London and Central London.
