Job description

Quantum is now, and it's built here.

Oxford Ionics, now part of IonQ, is pioneering the next generation of quantum computing. Using our world-leading trapped-ion technology, we’re building the most powerful, accurate and reliable quantum systems to tackle problems that today’s supercomputers cannot solve.

Joining Oxford Ionics means becoming part of a global IonQ team that is transforming the future of quantum technology - faster, at scale, and with real world impact.

What to expect:

We are looking for a Senior Mechanical, Electrical and Plumbing Facilities Technician to join our Facilities team. This is a hands-on, front-line role supporting the day-to-day operation of our site and the building systems that enable our teams to build some of the world’s most advanced quantum systems.

You will take ownership of routine facilities operations, preventative maintenance, compliance tasks and site activity control. Working across mechanical, electrical, plumbing, HVAC, lighting and wider building systems, you will help ensure our facilities remain safe, reliable and ready to support highly technical work.

This role would suit someone who enjoys practical problem solving, takes pride in keeping critical environments running smoothly, and is comfortable working closely with internal teams, external vendors and contractors.

What you’ll be responsible for:

You will be responsible for carrying out regular inspections, maintenance and repair tasks across building systems, making sure issues are managed through to resolution. You will follow preventative maintenance schedules, operate and monitor site systems, maintain accurate records, and help ensure compliance with relevant safety regulations, codes and company policies.

Key responsibilities will include:

  • Performing inspections, maintenance and minor repairs across HVAC, plumbing, mechanical, electrical, lighting and wider building systems
  • Coordinating with external vendors and contractors for specialist maintenance, repairs and project work
  • Monitoring facilities requests, responding to employee needs, and maintaining a service-focused relationship with internal stakeholders
  • Maintaining records for inspections, repairs and audits, while supporting compliance with safety requirements, site procedures and company policies
  • Supporting facilities emergency response, including protocols for power outages, water leaks and equipment failures, with occasional after-hours or weekend on-call support when required

Requirements

You will need hands-on experience working with mechanical, electrical and plumbing systems, alongside a strong understanding of facilities maintenance in a technical, manufacturing or laboratory environment. You should be comfortable reading schematics, drawings, technical specifications and operating procedures, and confident using hand tools to complete small repairs and practical facilities tasks.

We are looking for someone with a safety-first mindset who can recognise hazards, use appropriate PPE and work carefully in a busy technical environment. You should also be able to communicate clearly with colleagues, contractors and stakeholders, keeping people informed while driving issues through to completion.

You’d be a great fit with:

  • A technical degree or certification, with at least 10 years’ experience in facilities maintenance, mechanical, electrical and plumbing systems
  • Experience using facilities management software, CMMS systems, and common workplace tools including Google and Microsoft platforms
  • Practical experience completing small facilities, manufacturing or lab repairs using hand tools and appropriate procedures
  • The ability to carry out physically demanding work, including lifting up to 50 lbs, bending, kneeling, working overhead and carrying equipment
  • Experience in project coordination, analytical problem solving, or a Mechanical or Electrical Engineering background

Benefits

Be part of a team that’s shaping the future of quantum. We offer more than just a role, you’ll join a world class community of scientists, engineers and innovators working to unlock the full potential of quantum computing.

We offer a range of benefits, including opportunities to further your career alongside industry leaders, a competitive salary with IonQ stock options, an annual performance bonus, generous annual leave, flexible hybrid working, private medical and dental insurance for you and your family, and much more.

Join us and be part of the future of quantum computing.

We’re proud to be an equal opportunity employer and welcome applicants from all backgrounds.
