Job description

CORE PURPOSE

We are seeking an empathetic, strategic Special Educational Needs Coordinator (SENCO) to lead and oversee the delivery of special educational needs provision across our school. Operating within a dedicated specialist setting, the successful candidate will manage Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP) reviews, coordinate multi-agency provision, support teaching staff with high-leverage adaptive strategies, and ensure every pupil receives tailored support to achieve their full potential.

THE SCHOOL

A specialist 11–19 special school located in Slough, Berkshire, catering to pupils with complex Learning Difficulties (LD), Autism Spectrum Condition (ASC), and associated communication needs. The school operates with structured, trauma-informed practices managed in close alignment with senior leadership and multi-agency teams. The inclusion department functions within a calm, supportive environment using modern digital tools to ensure annual reviews, EHCP compliance, and parent communications run seamlessly.

KEY TASKS & DAILY OPERATIONS

  • Strategic Provision & Compliance: Lead the development, implementation, and evaluation of the school’s SEN strategy, ensuring full compliance with the SEND Code of Practice and statutory obligations.

  • EHCP & Annual Review Management: Coordinate and chair EHCP annual reviews, liaising closely with local authority SEN caseworkers, parents, carers, and external agencies.

  • Multi-Agency Leadership: Work collaboratively with speech and language therapists, occupational therapists, educational psychologists, and social care teams to design and implement holistic support plans.

  • Staff Guidance & Training: Provide high-quality professional development and coaching to teachers and support staff on adaptive teaching, positive behaviour support, and targeted interventions.

  • Data & Progress Tracking: Monitor and evaluate the academic, social, and developmental progress of pupils with SEN, utilizing digital assessment tools to adjust intervention strategies effectively.

PROFILE REQUIREMENTS

  • Qualifications: Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) and the National Award for SEN Co-ordination (NASENCO) / NPQ for SENCOs (or willingness to complete within statutory timelines).

  • Experience: Proven track record of successful teaching and SEN leadership, preferably within a special school, alternative provision, or strong mainstream SEN setting.

  • Skills: Expert knowledge of the SEND Code of Practice, exceptional organizational skills, high emotional intelligence, and strong leadership capabilities.

REGIONAL CONTEXT

  • Local Area & Community: Based in the bustling Berkshire town of Slough, the school serves a diverse and ambitious local community. Positioned along the Thames Valley, the area combines major business hubs, historic sites like nearby Windsor, expansive green spaces such as Upton Court Park, and a supportive network of local families.

  • Transport & Commuting: Slough benefits from outstanding regional transport connections, situated with immediate access to the M4 (Junctions 6/7), M25, and M40 motorway corridors. Transit connectivity is exceptional, with comprehensive local bus networks and direct Elizabeth line and Great Western Railway train services from Slough Station, offering swift routes into London Paddington, Reading, and Heathrow Airport.
