Reporting to the Sales Director, the Hire Manager will have full responsibility for the commercial and operational performance of the Hire Division. The successful candidate will lead the complete hire operation from initial customer enquiry through to quotation, sales, planning, installation, delivery, collection, asset return and customer aftercare. They will be responsible for driving hire revenue, increasing gross profit, improving operational efficiency and developing the hire fleet to support the continued growth of the business.


The Hire Manager will be expected to be customer focused and hands on, visiting customer sites where required for installations or support with installations, resolve operational challenges and ensure the highest standards of service are delivered. The role will also require travel between First Fence depots to support teams, improve processes, share best practice and ensure consistent hire operations across all locations.


This role requires a commercially minded leader who can identify new opportunities, improve business performance and help establish First Fence as the UK's leading national hire provider.


Duties and Responsibilities

  • Lead and develop the Hire Division, taking full responsibility for the commercial and operational performance of the department from initial customer enquiry through to quotation, installation, delivery, collection, asset return and customer aftercare
  • Drive hire revenue, gross profit and business growth by developing existing customers, winning new business, increasing asset utilisation, identifying upsell and cross-sell opportunities, introducing new hire products and expanding the hire fleet to support the company's long-term growth strategy
  • Manage the day-to-day operation of the Hire Division, ensuring hire orders are processed efficiently, installations, deliveries and collections run smoothly, stock is available and customer expectations are exceeded throughout the entire hire journey
  • Attend customer visits where required, assist with installation planning, identify opportunities and ensure the company delivers a high-quality hire service from start to finish
  • Travel between First Fence depots to support local teams, review performance, improve processes, maintain operational standards and ensure a consistent approach to hire across all locations
  • Lead, recruit, develop and manage the Hire team, ensuring all colleagues involved in the hire process, including warehouse operatives, pickers and drivers, receive the appropriate training to maintain high standards of service, stock handling and operational performance
  • Take ownership of hire assets by ensuring accurate stock control, maximising fleet utilisation, extending the lifecycle of equipment, managing refurbishment where required and ensuring customers are charged appropriately for damaged or missing equipment
  • Work closely with the Sales, Marketing, Operations, Transport, Warehouse and Systems teams to continually improve processes, develop systems that support business growth, enhance the customer experience and ensure the Hire Division operates efficiently across all locations
  • Support the development and promotion of the Hire Division by working alongside Marketing to increase brand awareness, generate quality leads, launch new products and establish First Fence as a leading national hire provider
  • Build and maintain strong customer relationships by providing excellent service, managing customer service cases, resolving complaints, attending customer sites where required and identifying opportunities to improve customer satisfaction and retention
  • Develop and manage installation and dismantling services, including building and maintaining a trusted network of subcontract installation teams to support projects across the UK
  • Produce regular reports on departmental performance, including revenue, gross profit, asset utilisation, stock accuracy and operational KPIs, identifying opportunities for continuous improvement
  • Travel regularly between depots, suppliers and customer sites as required, supporting the ongoing development of the Hire Division and carrying out any other reasonable duties requested by the Sales Director

  • Achieve this by building customer relationships, attending customer visits, working with Sales and Marketing teams, analysing market opportunities and using performance data to identify areas for growth
  • Achieve this by improving planning, communication and processes between teams, monitoring operational performance and resolving issues quickly to maintain a high level of service
  • Achieve this by creating clear training plans, coaching team members, setting expectations and developing a culture of accountability and continuous improvement
  • Achieve this by introducing effective asset management processes, reviewing utilisation reports, improving return procedures and working closely with operational teams
  • Achieve this by building strong internal relationships, holding regular reviews, sharing information and leading cross-functional improvement projects
  • Achieve this by working with Marketing and Sales to create targeted campaigns, customer communications, sales tools and initiatives that increase awareness and generate new opportunities
  • Achieve this by creating regular reporting, reviewing performance trends, identifying areas for improvement and implementing actions to improve results
  • Achieve this by identifying inefficiencies, working with Systems teams, introducing standard ways of working and ensuring processes support future growth
  • Achieve this by building strong customer relationships, providing practical solutions, working closely with internal teams and ensuring customer expectations are met from start to finish
  • Achieve this by spending time with depot teams, understanding local challenges, sharing best practice and supporting improvements across the wider business
