Hybrid: 1- 2 days at our Support Centre in Coleshill, Birmingham.

Why The Works?

We don’t just sell products.
We inspire reading, learning, creativity and play.

The Works. It literally means everything. And whatever your story or background, we’re all about unlocking imagination and making creativity accessible to everyone. Whether you’re engaging with customers on the frontline or supporting our colleagues behind the scenes, your impact can be profound and far-reaching.

This is more than toys and books and art supplies. This is about inspiring people to read, learn, create and play. So, with the right passion, it all starts with you.

Become a Website Experience Manager

We're looking for a Website Experience Manager for a 12-month fixed term contract to provide leadership, support and direction for our website function during an exciting period of change.

As our website is non-transactional, you’ll help grow our online brand appeal, using the website as a powerful shop window to inspire store visits, deepen engagement with existing customers and attract new audiences to The Works. You’ll lead a small web team with clarity, confidence and direction, helping colleagues navigate change while creating the conditions for them to grow their potential.

You’ll lead the delivery of our website re-platform project, strengthen the foundations of how we manage and develop our website, and build the capability, governance and ways of working needed for long-term success. Working across Brand, Creative, Technology and external partners, you’ll keep key milestones on track while supporting the transition to a future operating model and embedding sustainable processes for the wider Brand Marketing team.

Your Mission

  • Provide stability, leadership and direction for the website team during a period of transformation, building clarity, confidence and capability.

  • Lead the Brand workstream of the website re-platform project, working closely with Technology and external partners to keep milestones, dependencies and risks proactively managed.

  • Define and embed robust website governance, processes and ways of working that support long-term ownership and consistency.

  • Establish a sustainable approach to content management, SEO, UX and website optimisation.

  • Maximise the website’s role as a non-transactional brand and inspiration platform, bringing our brand and ranges to life, supporting customer discovery and encouraging store visits.

  • Use insight and performance data to identify opportunities to improve customer engagement and website effectiveness.

  • Build capability within the team and wider Brand Marketing function, embedding best practice, knowledge sharing and confidence in new ways of working.

  • Develop a clear future operating model for the website function, including responsibilities, workflows, governance and ongoing support needs.

  • Create clear roadmaps, documentation and processes that enable long-term success and help inform future digital investment opportunities.

Skills/Behaviours That Will Set You Apart

Essential

  • Proven experience leading website, digital transformation or re-platform projects.

  • Experience managing and developing teams through periods of change.

  • Strong understanding of website governance, content operations and digital best practice.

  • Excellent stakeholder management skills, with the ability to influence across Brand, Technology and external partners.

  • Strong understanding of UX, customer journeys, accessibility and SEO.

  • Experience managing CMS platforms and content-led websites.

  • Experience using Google Analytics 4 (GA4) and other performance tools to drive decision-making.

  • Strong project management skills with experience managing multiple workstreams and dependencies.

  • Comfortable operating strategically while remaining hands-on where required.

  • Highly organised, resilient and confident navigating ambiguity and change.

Desirable

  • Experience delivering website re-platform projects within retail or consumer brands.

  • Working knowledge of HTML/CSS and website development processes.

  • Experience working with agencies and third-party development partners.

  • Familiarity with project management and collaboration tools such as Monday(.)com, and Miro.

  • Passion for brand, storytelling and customer experience

Being a great leader

As a great leader with wonderful people skills, you'll create an environment that's more than just co-workers - it's a team.

Align Goals with Values: Ensure that your team’s goals are clearly connected to the company’s values and purpose. This helps colleagues see the bigger picture and understand how their work contributes to the overall mission.
Clear Communication: Ensure that your team understands the goals, expectations, and their roles. Regularly share updates, encourage open dialogue and have regular check-ins.
Role Model: Lead by example. Demonstrate the behaviours and attitudes you expect from your team, such as punctuality, responsibility, and being a brand ambassador.
Provide Feedback: Offer constructive feedback regularly. Recognise achievements and address areas for improvement in a supportive and continuous growth manner.
Empower Your Team: Delegate tasks and trust your team to handle them. This builds confidence and promotes professional growth.
Conflict Resolution: Address conflicts promptly and fairly. Foster an environment where issues can be discussed openly and resolved amicably.
Empathy: Understand and consider the feelings and perspectives of your team members. This helps in building strong, supportive relationships

And let's not forget about the most important part… your team's well-being and aspirations. You'll be their biggest supporter, cheering them on. You'll have amazing everyday conversations with your team, discussing everything from their performance to their wildest career aspirations.

Our Purpose

To inspire reading, learning, creativity and play 💛💙

Our Values

We are Crafty 🎨 | Smart with what we've got.

We are Caring 💛 | Heart in every action.

We are Can-do 🚀| Energy that gets it done.

We Listen. We Care

Each year, we run an anonymous colleague engagement survey. This is so important for us to hear your feedback and suggestions. We want to know what’s going great, and what needs a couple of tweaks to help make The Works the best place you’ve ever worked! You’ll have opportunity to help give us that direction.

Promoting Diversity, Inclusion, and Applying Reasonable Adjustments

At The Works, we’re proud to have an inclusive culture where everyone can feel able to be themselves. Our roles are open to everyone, and we particularly welcome applications from people and communities that are under-represented in our business.

We’re open to conversations about working hours and flexible working and, where possible, we’ll try to support this. If you need any reasonable adjustments during the application or interview process - or would like to discuss how you could carry out an essential part of the role - please let us know. We’ll be happy to explore what support may help.
