Job summary
This is a developmental role over 3 years. You will work towards successful completion of a BSc (Hons) degree in Podiatry and recognition by the Health Care Professions Council (HCPC) as an Allied Health Professional (AHP) Podiatrist. You will develop and maintain knowledge, skills and competencies related to the role of a Podiatrist through your apprenticeship within the service as well as through completion of the Podiatry Apprenticeship training programme. Whilst undertaking this training you will work within the service as a Podiatry Apprentice, where your role will reflect your learning. The Podiatry Apprenticeship Programme combines and integrates academic and work-based learning through close collaboration between employers and education providers. You can expect to spend 67% of your time learning on the job and approximately 33% of your time learning off the job. As a Podiatry Apprentice you will be based as an employee within Guy's and St Thomas', working in a specified clinical setting, as well as gaining further professional experience via practice placements. This will enable you to gain a wide appreciation of many health and care contexts, which will enable you to fulfil all the requirements of the BSc (Hons) Podiatry Programme. On successful completion of the Programme you will be equipped with the appropriate knowledge, skills, attitudes and behaviours to ensure competence at the point of qualification.

Main duties of the job

  • To organise and manage a clinical caseload, mapped against evolving capability, which will include gaining knowledge and experience of providing Podiatry care for patients with a variety of conditions (including diabetes, musculoskeletal, rheumatological and vascular conditions).
  • To provide care to patients within agreed competencies and training as delegated by the Podiatrist within set clinical protocols.
  • To assist the podiatrist during the consultation in all aspects of care either directly or indirectly
  • To be responsible for the assessment and diagnosis of new and existing patients in line with departmental protocols using judgements involving complex facts requiring the comparison of a range of options.


About us
The Foot Health Team works across the acute and community sites of Lambeth and Southwark as well as in peoples homes. We support the SE sector and are made up of a number of specialist departments including high risk acute foot, MSK, podiatric surgery and nail surgery services. We are a large team of almost 50 staff from all backgrounds and between us all have a wealth of support we can offer you.

Job responsibilities

  • To attend University and clinical placements as set out in the degree programme.
  • To complete and pass academic modules and clinical placements to the required standard in order to progress through the programme.
  • To ensure timely achievement in accordance with the academic programme requirements.
  • To complete and pass the End Point Assessment
  • To organise and manage a clinical caseload, mapped against evolving capability, which will include gaining knowledge and experience of providing Podiatry care for patients with a variety of conditions (including diabetes, musculoskeletal, rheumatological and vascular conditions).
  • To gain knowledge and skills (analytical and reasoning) to assess, diagnose, develop and implement individualised treatment programmes for patients with a wide variety of clinical needs encompassing both acute & long-term conditions
  • To empower the patient and others to participate in thepatients self-care and aim to enhance person-centred care.
  • To gain experience during the period of the apprenticeship in a wide range of clinical areas for example diabetic outpatients, vascular, community outpatients, rheumatology and musculoskeletal, and domiciliary / home visits.
  • To provide care to patients within agreed competencies and training as delegated by the Podiatrist within set clinical protocols.
  • To be responsible for the assessment and diagnosis of new and existing patients in line with departmental protocols using judgements involving complex facts requiring the comparison of a range of options.
  • To use clinical reasoning and knowledge of evidence based practice to formulate an appropriate care plan either for individual patients or within a group setting such as diabetic foot care plans.
  • To carry out treatments to patients using equipment for which adequate training has been given.
  • To deliver care based on selection of appropriate treatments and clinical aids available, monitoring and adapting accordingly
  • To follow Departmental and Organisation policies, procedures and guidelines but have the discretion to make own justified diagnosis and decisions within professional guidelines as may be beneficial to the patient
  • To continually reassess patients in order to progress treatments effectively. To monitor the changing needs of the patient and where necessary, refer the patient back to the Podiatrist if their Podiatric or medical condition needs to be reviewed.
  • Assessing the condition and risk status and discussing the results of the examination with the individual and/or carer and explain any specific 4 problems(s), which may require further tests or treatment and implement these referrals.
  • To be actively involved in the provision of health education and management advice to patients, relatives and carers based on what matters to the service users
  • To contribute to the clinical team by discussing own and others input around patients and ensuring a co-ordinated care plan.
  • To assist in joint visit sessions within the scope of instructions laid down by the Podiatrist. To understand the implications of medication and medical conditions on care and treatment planning and relate this to the patient, family or carer as appropriate.
  • To promote the value of Podiatry to patients, carers and fellow health professionals, seeking support from senior colleagues as appropriate.
  • To carry out risk assessments (including manual handling) and ensure actions are taken for safe intervention as appropriate, complying at all times with requirements of health and safety regulations 4.3 Administration and IT
  • To maintain accurate records of activity using POMR system and contribute input into trust information systems as directed & in a timely manner.
  • To maintain accurate records of all patient consultations and related work carried out at each clinical session, including computerised data collection. 4.4 Performance and Quality
  • To take part in trust and service audit / service development activity as may relate to own work and caseload.
  • Contribute to wider audit, surveys and trials within the trust as indicated by line manager or senior colleagues
  • To contribute to and comment upon Departmental and Trust polices when requested or desirable
  • To follow procedures and guidelines but have the discretion to make own judgements with robust evidence for them Planning and organization 4.5 5
  • To prioritise clinical and non-clinical activity (e.g. meetings and training) to best manage clinical caseload, ensuring clinics are appropriately booked in order to maximize delivery of appropriate and effective care, liaising closely with clinical and support staff to achieve this
  • To plan own workload around such activities as domiciliary visits
  • To be flexible and provide cover for other members of the team at short notice or during periods of absence
  • To assist the podiatrist in the planning of activities and programmes.
  • To ensure smooth organization of patient group work
