Job Purpose

The Environmental Health Officer Food Safety Inspector is responsible for undertaking food hygiene and food standards inspections in accordance with statutory requirements and national guidance. The role involves carrying out on-site inspections of food businesses assessing compliance with food safety legislation completing all required inspection documentation and supporting the delivery of an effective food safety service through accurate reporting and timely submission of records.


Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct food hygiene and food standards inspections of food businesses in line with legislative requirements and Council procedures.
  • Carry out inspections of new food businesses and assess compliance with relevant food safety legislation.
  • Complete thorough on-site inspections and accurately assess food hygiene standards.
  • Prepare and issue handwritten inspection reports at the time of each visit.
  • Complete all required inspection documentation including data input sheets and aide memoires.
  • Leave the appropriate Food Hygiene Rating Scheme sticker at inspected premises where applicable.
  • Upload all completed inspection documentation to the designated shared system within seven days of each inspection.
  • Record and evidence void premises in accordance with agreed procedures including photographic evidence where required.
  • Maintain accurate records and ensure inspections are completed to required quality and compliance standards.
  • Work independently managing inspection schedules to meet agreed completion targets.


Requirements

Essential

  • Qualified Environmental Health Officer registered with the Environmental Health Registration Board and competent in food safety; or
  • Higher Certificate in Food Control or Higher Certificate in Food Inspection with demonstrable competence and recent experience undertaking food hygiene and food standards inspections.
  • Recent experience carrying out food hygiene and food standards inspections.
  • Thorough knowledge of food safety legislation inspection processes and regulatory enforcement.
  • Ability to produce accurate inspection reports and maintain detailed records.
  • Strong organisational and time management skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and manage an inspection workload efficiently.

Desirable

  • Experience inspecting a wide range of food businesses.
  • Familiarity with Food Hygiene Rating Scheme requirements and documentation.
  • Experience working within a local authority environmental health service.


Additional Information

  • Location: Surrey - Field-based.
  • Hours per week: Flexible inspection-based.
  • Payment: Paid per completed inspection in accordance with the agreed rates (Category AE) with approved void premises paid at the agreed void rate (25 void rate).

  • Category A: 110
  • Category B: 89
  • Category C: 82.50
  • Category D: 66
  • Category E: 60
