Job summary
An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Nurse Specialist in PEA & Pulmonary Hypertension (CTEPH) in the PVDU department at Royal Papworth Hospital. The PVDU are looking to appoint a nurse for a fourteen month fixed term secondment to join the CTEPH specialist nurses to support and deliver care to patients with Chronic Thromboembolic Pulmonary Hypertension & those who are undertaking Pulmonary endarterectomy (PEA) surgery. The successful candidate will be able to work autonomously to support this patient group and work within wider MDT. The role involves caring for PEA and BPA (ballon pulmonary angioplasty) patients through all stages of the patient's pathway.

The role will cover all aspects of working as a Nurse Specialist in the field of PEA & Chronic Thromboembolic Pulmonary Hypertension. Full training will be provided. This is a great opportunity for someone to gain experience and skills needed for a specialist nurses' role . You would be working within a small, specialised team, and you should be able to demonstrate a knowledge of CTEPH.

The successful candidate will act as a resource for patients, relatives & other healthcare professionals, have advanced communication skills, have the ability to work autonomously and have good IT knowledge & skills.

Main duties of the job

  • Take responsibility for ensuring a high standard of nursing care is delivered to patients acting as an educator and advocate when required.
  • Always promote the privacy and dignity of patients.
  • Utilise database and EPR to update patient information and for date collection
  • Participate regularly in the management of the database and develop knowledge of the system so that in the absence of a research colleague support can be provided.
  • Act as a specialist resource and point of contact for patients their relatives and health care professionals who may require help and advice.
  • Liaise with referring centres to update patient pathway information.
  • Participate in holding the bleeps for the service.
  • Maintain accurate record keeping consistent with legislation, policies and procedures in line with NMC Code of Conduct.
  • Communicate in an efficient and effective manner with all staff, patients, visitors and external sources, identifying any problems and dealing with them in a tactful manner.
  • Participate in MDT meetings and contribute to care planning. Ensure meeting outcomes are carefully actioned and recorded.
  • Develop communication skills in dealing with challenging conversations about surgical risk and life limiting disease.

Person Specification
Qualifications
Essential

  • Professional adult nursing qualification and clinical knowledge acquired through training to diploma or degree level
  • Plus post graduate training in specialist area OR specialist knowledge across the range of work procedures and practices, underpinned by theoretical knowledge or relevant practical experience.
  • Leadership/management training and/or experience.
  • Registered with Nursing and Midwifery Council.


Experience
Essential

  • Significant experience in field of own practice.
  • Experience of managing or supervising staff and ability to mentor/educate junior staff.
  • An understanding of clinical governance frameworks including Patient Safety Incident Response Framework (PSIRF), policy and procedure, audit and quality assurance.
  • An understanding of safeguarding policies and procedures, particularly those related to vulnerable patients.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to be able to problem solve, use own initiative and plan, organise and prioritise own and others' workload.
  • Evidence of continuous professional development and a willingness to participate in further training and education.
  • Competent IT skills
