Cardiothoracic Theatre Educator

Job summary
An exciting opportunity for a Band 6 theatre educator in Cardiothoracic, Recovery and Cath Lab department.

The expectation of this role will be to be responsible for developing and co-ordinating education initiatives within the theatre department. To lead and take continuing responsibility for the in-service development of all the staff working within the theatre departments.

To provide leadership and motivation to establish exceptional clinical practice. To be responsible for the development of programmes of education and training, whilst demonstrating awareness of cultural diversity in the workplace and the need to adapt training accordingly. To develop maintain an effective educational environment through coaching and developing all levels of staff to support all staff to deliver high quality patient care and service delivery.

The practice educator will work closely with clinical lead, co-ordinator and theatre manager.

The practice educator will be responsible for the training, coaching and support of all staff working in cardiothoracic theatres.

support the senior management team to deliver the agreed directorate vision, aimed at providing safe, high quality, efficient and effective cardiothoracic services to our patients and key stakeholders across the Southwest peninsula.

Main duties of the job
  • To provide clinical expertise and work as part of a multidisciplinary team.
  • To work with clinical staff to identify appropriate learning strategies.
  • Responsible for ensuring resources are used effectively within the clinical environment.
  • Maintain an effective clinical learning environment through excellence in practice and assisting in service training and education.
  • Assist in the delivery of teaching to other educational departments eg. Including CICU, Clearbrook and Crownhill staff, Plymouth University and Peninsula Medical School
  • Assist in the delivery of a structured, competency based induction and training programme for new staff to the clinical area ensuring a system of preceptorship and mentorship is fully utilised.
  • Liaise with other Trust educators and the education team in developing educational objectives.
  • In conjunction with the ward manager meet with all new health care professionals allocated to the ward/department areas within the first month. Assess and discuss required education and training with the individual and line manager.

Job responsibilities
  • Assist in the review and up dating of competency training packs and assessment packs ensuring completion of specific measurable objectives. Assist with production of orientation materials.
  • Give appropriate feedback on progress/difficulties of staff to the line managers.
  • Contribute to and deliver the trust education strategy.
  • Assist in Research & Clinical Audit within the clinical area.
  • Attend education/training development meetings/training with the Human Resources & Organizational Development Team
  • Support and assist in the management of the delivery of corporate and mandatory training for all nursing/midwifery staff within the specialty/directorate.
  • Work in conjunction with Ward managers and Matrons, coordinate and ensure the assessment of competence for nursing staff as required for specific clinical skills.
  • Ensure a robust and accurate means of documentation and record-keeping of clinical training delivered or coordinated to provide evidence of compliance with CQC standards.
  • Assist the ward managers and link nurses / key trainers with the delivery of Trust-wide education and training initiatives as required.

Person Specification
Evidence
Essential
  • Demonstrable post registration experience
  • Demonstrable leadership experience.
  • Demonstrable experience in Cardiothoracic Theatres, Cardiothoracic Theatre Recovery or Cath Labs

Desirable
  • Demonstrable experience at band 6 and experience of teaching large groups

  • Excellent communication skills, written and verbal, with proven ability to demonstrate fluency, clarity and effectiveness at all levels.

  • Proven ability to demonstrate their experience of planning and leading a change process in a clinical setting.
