Job description
Job Summary

Main duties of the job
As a Salaried GP, you will provide high-quality, patient-centred primary care through face-to-face, telephone, and online consultations. You will assess, diagnose, and manage a wide range of acute and chronic conditions, prescribe safely, and make appropriate referrals where required. You will work collaboratively with the wider multidisciplinary team to deliver coordinated care, contribute to quality improvement initiatives, support preventative healthcare, and maintain accurate clinical records. The role also includes participating in practice meetings, clinical governance activities, and continuing professional development to ensure the highest standards of care.

Job responsibilities
Job Summary
The Salaried GP will provide high-quality, patient-centred medical services to the registered practice population. The post holder will assess, diagnose, and manage a wide range of health conditions while promoting health, preventing disease, and supporting patients to achieve the best possible outcomes. They will work collaboratively with the multidisciplinary team to deliver safe, effective, and compassionate primary care in line with NHS standards and GMC guidance.

Main Duties and Responsibilities
  • Undertake face-to-face, telephone, and online consultations with patients presenting with acute and chronic medical conditions.
  • Assess, investigate, diagnose, and manage patients using evidence-based clinical practice.
  • Prescribe medication safely and appropriately in accordance with national and local prescribing guidance.
  • Request and interpret investigations, including pathology and diagnostic imaging.
  • Make referrals to secondary care and community services when clinically appropriate.
  • Manage long-term conditions and contribute to proactive care planning.
  • Undertake home visits where clinically required.
  • Provide preventative healthcare, health promotion, and lifestyle advice.
  • Safeguard vulnerable adults and children, following local and national safeguarding policies.
  • Maintain accurate, contemporaneous, and legally compliant clinical records.
  • Process laboratory results, hospital correspondence, prescriptions, and other clinical administration in a timely manner.
  • Participate in duty doctor sessions where required.
  • Contribute to practice-based clinical meetings, multidisciplinary team discussions, and quality improvement activities.
  • Support the delivery of QOF, enhanced services, and other contractual requirements.
  • Participate in clinical audit, significant event analysis, and clinical governance activities.
  • Supervise, teach, or mentor medical students, GP registrars, or other healthcare professionals where appropriate.

Professional Responsibilities
  • Maintain full registration with the General Medical Council (GMC) and a licence to practise.
  • Remain on the NHS Performers List.
  • Work in accordance with GMC Good Medical Practice.
  • Maintain annual appraisal and revalidation requirements.
  • Participate in continuing professional development (CPD).
  • Maintain mandatory training appropriate to the role.
  • Comply with practice policies relating to confidentiality, information governance, equality and diversity, infection prevention and control, and health and safety.

The Salaried GP will work closely with:

Clinical Governance
The post holder will contribute to:
  • Continuous quality improvement.
  • Clinical audit and service evaluation.

  • Significant event reviews.
  • Patient safety initiatives.
  • Implementation of national and local clinical guidance.

Working Pattern
The role may be full-time or part-time, with sessions agreed according to service needs. Participation in extended access or enhanced services may be required by mutual agreement.

Person Specification
Qualifications
Essential
  • MBBS or equivalent medical qualification.
  • Full GMC registration with licence to practise.
  • Inclusion on the NHS Performers List.
  • MRCGP or equivalent qualification.
  • Excellent communication and consultation skills.
  • Ability to work effectively within a multidisciplinary team.
  • Commitment to high-quality, patient-centred care.
  • Good organisational and time management skills.
  • Competence in the use of GP clinical systems and electronic patient records.

Desirable
  • Experience of UK General Practice.
  • Experience using EMIS Web.
  • Interest in developing a specialist clinical area.
  • Experience of teaching or supervising learners.
  • Participation in quality improvement projects or research.
