Job summary
We are seeking to recruit a sessional GP to join our busy, friendly and supportive practice in Blackhall and Peterlee in County Durham.

Our practice prides itself on delivering quality patient care underpinned by a strong team ethos, where collaboration, mutual respect and support for all staff are paramount.

We are an established training practice, actively involved in the education and development of Doctors in Training (DiTs) and medical students. We are committed to supporting professional growth and actively encourage ongoing learning and development across the multidisciplinary team.

Main duties of the job
  • Provide safe, high-quality, patient centred clinical care to the registered practice population.
  • Deliver services in line with the GMS contract, its schedules, and all relevant statutory and regulatory requirements.
  • Issue prescriptions safely and appropriately, in accordance with local and national prescribing policies, guidelines, and formularies.
  • Proactively and effectively manage patients with long term conditions, including regular review and optimisation of care.
  • Complete all associated administrative work in a timely manner, including referrals, repeat prescription authorisation, review of test results, and handling of clinical correspondence.
  • Maintain clear, accurate and contemporaneous clinical records that comply with GMC standards, practice policies, and current professional guidance.
  • Work constructively within the multidisciplinary team, sharing the clinical and administrative workload equitably.
  • Practise in line with current evidence, national and local clinical guidelines, and learning from the practices audit and significant event programme.
  • Participate in and support continuous quality improvement, clinical audit, and service development activities within the practice.
  • Attend and contribute meaningfully to practice, clinical, and multidisciplinary team meetings as required.

About us
Blackhall and Peterlee Practice is a well-established, patient-focused GP practice located in the Easington area in County Durham. Rated 'Good' by the CQC, we provide high-quality primary care services, operating across two locations, caring for 10,000+ patients.

We are a large training practice with four GP partners, four salaried GPs, a nursing team of nurse practitioners, nurses and HCAs, pharmacists, social prescriber, care coordinator, and health and well-being coach, along with a large administrative team to support the team and patients. We provide education and supervision for GP trainees and medical students.

We utilise Systmone clinical system and make full use of modern digital solutions including Accurx, eConsult, Ardens, Patient partner and Agilio TeamNet to support efficient patient care and workflow management.

As part of Easington Central PCN we offer enhanced access and attached staff including physiotherapist, adult mental health support and CAMHS to support efficient patient care and workflow management. Everyone within the team and wider PCN team is supportive, friendly and approachable.

Job responsibilities
  • 15 minute appointments
  • Mix of telephone and face to face appointments.
  • Review and action test results/tasks/paperwork
  • Pro rata on call supported with same day nurse practitioner appointments.
  • Minimal home visits
  • Minimal extended access commitment.
  • Communicating effectively with staff, colleagues and patients.
  • Opportunistically addressing QOF alerts during consultations where appropriate.
  • Contributing to QOF to maximise points in all areas.
  • Identification and reporting of issues of quality and risk.
  • Protected time for your own reviews to allow for continuity of care.

We are a supportive Practice and encourage discussion of cases and information informally and in clinical meetings. The main responsibilities of the salaried GP are listed below. This list is not exhaustive and there may be a requirement for other tasks as appropriate.
  • Deliver high-quality, patient-centred medical care to the practice population.
  • Provide services in accordance with the GMS contract and associated regulatory requirements.
  • Prescribe medicines appropriately, adhering to local and national prescribing guidelines and formularies.
  • Manage patients with long-term conditions effectively and proactively.
  • Complete administrative tasks in a timely manner, including referrals, repeat prescription requests, test results, and associated correspondence.
  • Maintain accurate, contemporaneous clinical records in line with professional standards, practice policy, and current guidance.
  • Work collaboratively as part of the multidisciplinary team, contributing fairly to the overall practice workload.
  • Adhere to best practice as guided by clinical evidence, national guidelines, and the practice audit programme.
  • Contribute to continuous quality improvement initiatives and service development within the practice.
  • Participate fully in the annual appraisal process and maintain compliance with all professional requirements.
  • Prepare for and complete the GMC revalidation process.
  • Support the education and training of GP trainees, medical students, nursing students, and other healthcare professionals as appropriate.
  • Support the Partners in achieving the strategic objectives of the practice, identifying opportunities to enhance services, improve efficiency, and support financial sustainability.
  • Review and adhere to all practice policies, procedures, and protocols.
  • Promote collaborative working by maintaining effective communication with colleagues and fostering a culture of continuous improvement.
  • Ensure compliance with all relevant clinical governance, safeguarding, information governance, and health and safety requirements.
