Job description
Job summary
The Renal Vascular Access Nurse will act as the clinical expert and professional resource working as a member of the multi-professional team, providing and developing clinical and managerial responsibility to support the renal vascular access service. Ensure timely and appropriate formation planning of primary/secondary access to patients requiring renal replacement therapy. To improve the outcomes of permanent vascular or peritoneal access surgery, minimise complications and maximise the longevity of the access. To provide a nurse led assessment of vascular access potential. To implement evidence-based protocols and lead the surveillance of vascular access performance. To provide consistent, integrated approach to patient care. To be responsible for developing and monitoring standards of care, educating patients, carers and staff, ensuring practice is supported within an evidence-based framework in conjunction with the vascular access Band 7 nurse.

Successful applicants will be required to provide an immunisation and vaccination report, from either their current UK occupational health provider or their UK GP.

Main duties of the job
  • Coordinate the care of patients referred to the renal vascular access service throughout the care pathway with the multidisciplinary team and clinical services to ensure the effective management of this group of patients.
  • Accountable for own actions in accordance with the Code of Professional Conduct
  • Will contribute to corporate objectives, acting within local, Trust and statutory guidelines and policies at all times.
  • Highly developed communication skills enabling maintenance of a high quality service within a complex and challenging environment with often, conflicting priorities.
  • Act up in the absence of the Vascular Access Band 7 Nurse for maintaining smooth and safer running of the department.

Qualifications
Essential
  • Current Professional Registration.
  • Degree in relevant subject or professional experience demonstrating equivalent clinical development.
  • Evidence of continuous professional development (CPD).
  • Teaching and assessing qualifications.
  • Study at level 6 (degree / diploma)
Desirable
  • Renal Course qualification.

Experience
Essential
  • Post preceptorship experience and above.
  • Professional experience in appropriate speciality.
  • Highly developed communication skills.
  • Collaborative working with MDT.
  • Experience of conflict management.
Desirable
  • A good understanding of HR policy.
  • Experience in research and audit.
  • Autonomous practice.

Knowledge
Essential
  • A knowledgeable clinician with the ability to apply evidence-based practice.
  • An understanding of current issues relating to the NHS.
  • A knowledge of professional policies and procedures.
  • Knowledge of clinical governance and a commitment to clinical supervision and staff development.
Desirable
  • A good understanding of current issues relating to the NHS, particularly in renal vascular access.
