Job description
Job Summary:
We are looking to recruit a motivated and committed Salaried GP to join our practice team. The vacancy is for 4 sessions per week on Thursdays and Fridays.

About Us
PMS Practice with list size of 8600. CQC overall rating Good. Established training practice. High QOF achievers. SystmOne Clinical System. Single site with purpose built modern premises and free parking. We have 2 partners, 2 salaried GPs and full complement of Nursing and Administration staff. We have an excellent support team, including Clinical Pharmacists, Health and Wellbeing Coach and Care Coordinator. We currently train GP Registrars. We have good links with our local neighbourhood nursing team which include District Nurses and Community Matron. We are members of Barnsley Healthcare Federation and Barnsley Primary Care Network. Informal visits are welcome.

Main duties of the job
  • Conduct face-to-face, telephone and video consultations.
  • Assess, diagnose and treat a wide range of medical conditions.
  • Manage both acute illnesses and long-term conditions.
  • Prescribe medications and review treatment plans.
  • Arrange, interpret and act on investigations and test results.
  • Refer patients to secondary care, community services and specialist clinics when appropriate.
  • Provide health promotion and disease prevention advice.
  • Undertake home visits where required by the practice.
  • Manage urgent and same-day appointments.

Administrative Duties
  • Complete accurate clinical records and consultation notes.
  • Review laboratory results, correspondence and hospital letters.
  • Process prescription requests and medication reviews.
  • Complete medical reports, insurance forms and other documentation.
  • Follow up safeguarding concerns and significant clinical issues.

Safeguarding and Quality Responsibilities
  • Identify and act on safeguarding concerns involving children and vulnerable adults.
  • Follow NHS and GMC professional standards.
  • Participate in clinical governance, audits and quality improvement activities.
  • Report and learn from significant events and patient safety incidents.

Professional Responsibilities
  • Maintain GMC registration and licence to practise.
  • Participate in annual appraisal and revalidation.
  • Undertake Continuing Professional Development.
  • Adhere to practice policies, NHS guidance and information governance requirements.

Job responsibilities
Job Summary:
The post-holder will manage a caseload and deal with a wide range of health needs in a primary care setting, ensuring the highest standards of care for all registered and temporary patients.

Clinical Responsibilities:
  • In accordance with the Practice timetable, as agreed, the post-holder will make him/her-self available to undertake a variety of duties including surgery consultations, telephone consultations and queries, visiting patients at home, taking part in the on call rota, checking and signing repeat prescriptions and dealing with queries, paperwork and correspondence in a timely fashion.
  • Making professional, autonomous decisions in relation to presenting problems, whether self-referred or referred from other health care workers within the organisation
  • Assessing the health care needs of patients with undifferentiated and undiagnosed problems
  • Screening patients for disease risk factors and early signs of illness
  • In consultation with patients and in line with current Practice disease management protocols, developing care plans for health
  • Providing counselling and health education
  • Referring to other care providers as appropriate
  • Recording clear and contemporaneous consultation notes to agreed standards
  • Collecting data for audit purposes
  • Compiling and issuing computer-generated acute and repeat prescriptions (avoiding hand-written prescriptions whenever possible)
  • Prescribing in accordance with the Practice prescribing formulary (or generically) whenever this is clinically appropriate
  • In general the post-holder will be expected to undertake all the normal duties and responsibilities associated with a GP working within primary care.

Other Responsibilities within the Organisation:
  • Awareness of and compliance with all relevant Practice policies/guidelines, e.g. prescribing, confidentiality, data protection, health and safety
  • A commitment to life-long learning and audit to ensure evidence-based best practice
  • Contributing to evaluation/audit and clinical standard setting within the organisation
  • Contributing to the learning environment eg debriefs for GP registrars/PAs
  • Contributing to the development of computer-based patient records
  • Contributing to the summarising of patient records and Read-Coding patient data
  • Attending training and events organised by the Practice or other agencies, where appropriate.

In the course of seeking treatment, patients entrust us with, or allow us to gather, sensitive information in relation to their health and other matters. They do so in confidence and have the right to expect that staff will respect their privacy and act appropriately. In the performance of the duties outlined in this Job Description, the post-holder may have access to confidential information relating to patients and their carers, Practice staff and other healthcare workers. They may also have access to information relating to the Practice as a business organisation. All such information from any source is to be regarded as strictly confidential. Information relating to patients, carers, colleagues, other healthcare workers or the business of the Practice may only be divulged to authorised persons in accordance with the Practice policies and procedures relating to confidentiality and the protection of personal and sensitive data.

  • Using personal security systems within the workplace according to Practice guidelines
  • Identifying the risks involved in work activities and undertaking such activities in a way that manages those risks

  • Using appropriate infection control procedures, maintaining work areas in a tidy and safe way and free from hazards
  • Reporting potential risks identified.

Person Specification
Qualifications
Essential
  • MBBS/MBChB or equivalent medical qualification. Full GMC registration with licence to practise. Completion of GP Specialty Training and inclusion on the GMC GP Register.
Desirable
  • Additional postgraduate qualifications (e.g., diploma, MSc, MRCGP examiner, teaching qualification).

Experience
Essential
  • Experience working in General Practice. Ability to manage a wide range of acute and chronic conditions. Experience of clinical decision-making and risk management.
  • Competent in assessment, diagnosis, treatment, and referral of patients across all age groups. Commitment to evidence-based practice and patient safety.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Ability to communicate effectively with patients, relatives, and multidisciplinary teams.
  • Competent in the use of GP clinical systems, electronic records, and digital communication tools.
  • Ability to work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team. Demonstrates respect, professionalism, and support for colleagues.
  • Commitment to clinical governance, audit, and continuous professional development.
  • Patient-centred approach. Reliable, organised, adaptable, and resilient. Commitment to equality, diversity, and inclusion. Ability to work under pressure and manage competing priorities.
  • Eligible to work in the UK. DBS clearance. Medical indemnity appropriate for the role. Commitment to ongoing CPD and appraisal requirements.
Desirable
  • Experience in a salaried GP role. Experience of leading clinical services, audits, or quality improvement projects.
  • Special interest in an area such as women's health, dermatology, mental health, diabetes, minor surgery, or palliative care.
  • Experience of delivering presentations, teaching, or training.
  • Experience using SystmOne or other primary care systems.
  • Experience of mentoring trainees or supervising other healthcare professionals.
  • Experience leading service development initiatives or quality improvement programmes.
  • Demonstrated innovation and service improvement.
