Job description

Job summary
Assisting in the anaesthetic room with safe and highly skilled tasks for patient safety. cannulation, arterial cannulation, catheterisation, drug preparation and assisting with anaesthetic induction.

Checking of specialist equipment and full awareness of emergency readiness.

Responsible for the day-to-day workload planning including off duty, stores and stock control, reflecting the need to utilise all resources effectively and to meet budgetary constraints.

Demonstrate a commitment to evidence-based practice and clinical excellence and play an active part in the introduction of this evidence to improve patient centred care and service delivery.

Provide a supportive working environment for staff in area of responsibility ensuring opportunities for further development and education are identified to the theatre cluster team leader.

Main duties of the job

  • Deputise on a rotational basis for the nominated cluster Team Leader
  • To actively influence the overall efficiency and development of the theatre service. Working with Theatre Team leader, Clinical Services Manager and Theatre Operational team.
  • Undertake research and clinically lead the audit process.
  • Participate in risk management and Clinical Governance issues within designated area reporting any untoward incidences to Cluster Team Leader
  • Provide a supportive working environment for staff in area of responsibility ensuring opportunities for further development and education are identified to the theatre cluster team leader.
  • Working with the Theatre Team Leader, identify and develop clinical changes to working practice and working in different ways to enhance the service provision.
  • Provide daily leadership and clinical support for designated theatre. Maintaining 85% clinical and 15% managerial role within designated theatre including managing theatre suite out of hours.
  • Working within the NMC Code of Professional Conduct/HPC Professional Guidelines, be responsible for one's own professional conduct and monitor those aspects within the theatre team.

Job responsibilities

  • To update and facilitate induction programmes for new staff members in area of responsibility.
  • Support the theatre cluster team leader in ensuring that staffing establishments and skill mix are appropriate for clinical demands.
  • Take responsibility for clinical standards and ensure that theatre procedures and protocols are followed i.e. infection control, theatre dress policy etc.
  • Maintain personal and professional development to meet the changing demands of the service.
  • Be responsible for ensuring the theatre, anaesthetic and prep rooms are cleaned and maintained to a (high) standard.
  • Responsible for maintaining a safe environment, conducive to high patient and staff morale, achieved by leadership, personal example and involvement in the activities of the department.
  • Act as Mentor/Facilitator for their team, offering advice, guidance and support as appropriate.
  • Utilise clinical expertise and academic knowledge to act as a resource for members of the team and other health care professionals.
  • To provide a flexible approach to duty rosters and undertake any duties required to fulfil the needs of the service.
  • The post holder is required to be available for on-call duties, weekends, night duty and late shifts on a roistered basis and under negotiation, so ensuring the 24-hour emergency service is maintained.

  • Demonstrable experience in anaesthetic area at Band 5 or above. Credible clinical expert in relevant area of practice.
  • Proven managerial, leadership, facilitation skills and appraisal skills

  • Demonstrable experience within the Cardiothoracic Theatre complex

  • Proven ability to manoeuvre patients and equipment (e.g. pushing and pulling beds and equipment) as laid down in Trust guidelines . Accuracy, dexterity with good hand/eye coordination
  • Able to participate in the On-Call rota and flexible working conditions under negotiation
