Job summary

We are looking for an enthusiastic and highly motivated clinical pharmacist to co-lead our Womens and Children Pharmacy Service. You will provide highly specialist and advanced clinical and professional pharmaceutical services to patients at Newham Hospital.

The successful candidate will join a supportive, integrated pharmacy team, committed to delivering high quality patient care. You will have access to further educational opportunities and senior clinicians within Pharmacy and other disciplines who can provide mentorship and aid professional development.

Main duties of the job
  • To be responsible for the Clinical Pharmacy and Medicines Management services within the Womens and Children Servcies alongside the highly specialist Oncology and Paediatric Pharmacist
  • To manage the rotational specialist pharmacist, and trainees within the Womens and Children rotations and ensure provision and continuity of service across the site.
  • To support the development of Womens and Children services in line with the Pharmacy Department and Barts Health Strategies.
  • Close working with the multidisciplinary and wider pharmacy team to optimise patient flow. To actively support the improvement of Pharmacy Services based on evidence and appropriate innovation metrics.
  • To support the development of external links and actively input into local primary care organisations and any other relevant local and national specialist interest groups
  • To promote high-quality, cost-effective prescribing for patients.
  • To work closely with the Clinical Services Lead pharmacist, to ensure development / standardisation of medicine policies and procedures where appropriate and compliance with medicines legislation.
  • Work collaboratively with pharmacy and Trust staff on medicines savings and cost improvement opportunities.

Qualifications
Essential
  • MPharm Degree in Pharmacy
  • Registered as a pharmacist with the GPhC
  • Postgraduate Pharmacy Qualification or equivalent experience (minimum postgraduate diploma level)
  • Independent prescribing qualification, or willing to undergo training to become a non-medical prescriber

Desirable
  • Management qualification or equivalent experience
  • MSc in Clinical Pharmacy or equivalent.
  • GCP Trained in clinical trials.

Knowledge
Essential
  • Understanding of GPhC revalidation requirements
  • Knowledge of drug and therapeutics at Diploma level or equivalent.
  • Knowledge of medicines management systems at ward level
  • Up to date knowledge of legislation relevant to pharmacy practice, e.g. controlled drugs, Health and Safety at Work
  • Understanding of stock control systems
  • Understanding of the pharmaceutical care needs of women's and children's patients
  • An awareness of current national standards, guidelines and service delivery issues relevant to women's and children's patients
  • Understanding of the importance of adherence to SOPs and legislation
  • Demonstrates a good understanding of patient safety initiatives

Desirable
  • Knowledge of interface issues relevant to the patient group
  • Good knowledge of risk management issues relevant to the patient group and root cause analysis

Experience
Essential
  • Proven experience of good performance in previous posts
  • Previous experience of working within women's and children's providing a pharmacy service to women's and children's wards
  • Experience of supervising and organising staff and work
  • Successful experience of managing & leading projects
  • Previous evaluations or reviews of medicines
  • Ability to undertake and facilitate quality improvement, reflective practice, teaching and CPD

Desirable
  • Experience of providing a hospital-based service to Women's and Children's services patients at band 7 level or equivalent
  • Experience of providing evaluated information on drug expenditure
  • Experience of successfully managing staff

  • IT literate; able to use Microsoft office with intermediate IT skills including, accurate data entry and use of specialist computer programmes Demonstrates effective customer service skills
  • Evidence of good ward practice
  • Able to communicate complex information effectively to all health and care professionals, colleagues, patients and their loved ones

Desirable
  • Demonstrated ability to negotiate with and influence senior medical staff and senior management
  • Management of risk in the clinical use of medicines
  • Demonstrates strong leadership skills
  • Demonstrates ability to deliver staff training
