Job summary
UHB Neonates: Where a passion and career come together! Are you an experienced Neonatal Nurse with a Critical Care qualification? Are you looking to progress to a Band 6 or change your current employer? University Hospitals Birmingham has the job for you! At UHB we provide Neonatal care to over 10,000 babies across the region. Heartlands have a busy Level 3 unit consisting of 32 cots, comprising of 12 Critical Care & 20 Special Care cots, a Transitional Care unit and Neonatal Community Outreach Team. Good Hope is a Level 1 Special Care Baby Unit housing 12 Special Care cots with the capacity for stabilisation of sick and preterm infants in preparation for transfer within our Neonatal Network. The post holder will be required to work across both sites. You will join an established, diverse team of Neonatal professionals who deliver high quality, safe, effective care to our babies and families. In this role you will take charge of a clinical shift, coordinating and organising care across the unit. Effective communication skills are essential, to ensure you liaise effectively with families, internal and external teams. You will support colleagues, share expertise and demonstrate consistent professional attitudes and behaviours. Our shift times are: Long Days 7.30-20.00 and Night shift 19.30-8.00. Main duties of the job
The post holder will act as a role model for junior team members in the delivery of consistent high standards of nursing practice, promoting a Family Integrated Care model. They will deputise for the Senior Sister and will support the leadership and management of the department with particular emphasis on quality and clinical standards. They will have clinical responsibility for managing the Neonatal service when on shift, ensuring patient flow and capacity is managed safely, they will have an active involvement in safeguarding and supporting safe discharge. The band 6 will coordinate and allocate staff each shift, considering safety, competence and skill mix. They will be a visible presence for staff, families and visitors. The individual will be required to work closely with the internal and external MDT. The post holder will take on designated duties that support the development of staff and promote evidenced based care. In the absence of the Senior Sister/Charge Nurse during nights and weekends the individual will be required to make decisions with the MDT, solve problems and escalate concerns via appropriate channels. The post holder will be required to continually develop to enhance their professional knowledge and skills. They will be supported to grow their confidence with leadership.

Qualifications
Essential
  • Registered Child Branch Nurse, Adult Nurse or Midwife on the NMC register
  • Qualification in speciality. Neonatal Critical Care/ Intensive Care
Desirable
  • Health care management / leadership qualification

Experience
Essential
  • Substantial post registration experience working in a Neonatal critical care environment delivering family integrated care and supervising / mentoring junior staff
  • Evidence of professional /clinical knowledge in area supplemented by specialist clinical and or managerial training and CPD
  • Can demonstrate understanding / experience / willingness to be a practice-based supervisor / assessor as detailed in the Nursing & Midwifery Council (NMC) standards for student supervision and assessment
  • Professional portfolio which demonstrates continuing professional development,evidence of ability to maintain professional registration
  • Relevant and recent clinical experience within the speciality /acute care setting, including the supervision /education of junior staff
  • Experience of mentoring undergraduate students
  • Evidence of ability to lead /coordinate a shift /area of department
  • Experience in learning from incidents /complaints and supporting changes in practice.
