We are delighted to invite applications for a substantive consultant post General Paediatrics with a special interest in Paediatric palliative care. Applications are particularly welcomed from candidates that hold a SPIN in palliative care.

This is a new post for department following a successful pilot which has demonstrated positive outcomes for the children’s hospital.

The successful candidates will join a highly motivated, consultant-led team delivering high quality Paediatric care to Tower Hamlets & East London.

The general paediatric department is based at the Royal London Hospital in Whitechapel. The Children’s Hospital Division of the Royal London Hospital manages over 20,000 inpatient spells a year and sees over 22,000 new patients and over 47,000 follow up patients per year in clinic.

Main duties of the job

The Paediatric department is welcoming and friendly. Our multidisciplinary clinical team includes nurses, play specialists, clinical practitioners, clinical nurse specialists, and allied health professionals working alongside doctors in training, clinical fellows, associate specialists & consultants. All of our team are dedicated to the highest standards in clinical care and patient safety.

The general paediatric duties of the post include; participation in the short stay attending week rotas &/or inpatient attending week rotas, the on-call rota (which includes on-site duties until 22:00 on week nights) and both general paediatric & rapid access clinics.

The paediatric palliative care duties of the post include providing palliative care expertise to the wider children’s hospital including NICU and PCCU with a focus on symptom management, advance care planning and supporting MDTs in ethical decision making. Professional development for this part of the role will be provided by the Great Ormond Street Hospital palliative care team.

This is a 10PA post, but applications are welcome from candidates hoping to work less than whole time or who wish to job share.

Person specification

Qualifications and knowledge

Essential criteria

  • MBBS or equivalent degree
  • MRCPCH or equivalent
  • On GMC Specialist Register in Paediatrics or within 6 months of CCT

Desirable criteria

  • Other postgraduate degree (Note: Portfolio Pathway (formerly CESR) applicants must be on the Specialist Register at the point of application)

Experience

Essential criteria

  • Broad range of clinical experience in Acute General Paediatrics
  • Higher specialist training in Paediatric Medicine
  • Up to date APLS/PALS
  • Valid Level 3 Safeguarding Training
  • Higher specialist training in paediatric palliative care (minimum of 6 months in a specialist paediatric palliative care centre)
  • Paediatric palliative medicine SPIN (or equivalent

Desirable criteria

  • At least six months of PICU at middle grade level

Skills and knowledge

  • Knowledge of business planning and budgets
  • Experience in Medical Management roles
  • Experience of dealing with governance and risk
  • Experience of research projects (including PI)
