Job summary
Are you ready to take your surgical career to the next level? We are seeking an experienced Surgical Care Practitioner (SCP) to join our dynamic team and lead in a specialist area of care.

As a registered healthcare professional with an extended scope of practice, under the supervision and direction of the Consultant Surgeon the Surgical Care Practitioner, you will act as first or second assistant for surgical procedures in theatre and be responsible for carrying out specific procedures during operations.

As Lead Specialist in this defined area of care, you will work closely with consultant surgeons and Theatre staff to develop this role to its full potential.

This is an exciting opportunity to work at the forefront of surgical innovation, supporting consultant surgeons and shaping the future of advanced clinical practice. We currently have two Da Vinci robots on site at SNHSFT.

Please note thisrole is an indicative NHS Agenda for Change Band 8a post that is awaiting the outcome of a Job Matching Review Panel.

Main duties of the job
  • Participate in robotic-assisted surgical (RAS) procedures and contribute to all aspects of pre-operative, intra-operative, and post-operative patient care under the direct, indirect, and proximal supervision of Consultant Surgeons.
  • Support the training and development of Registrars in robotic surgery across Urology specialties, including undertaking and teaching the bedside assistant role. Actively contribute to the training, competency assessment, and ongoing development of Surgical Registrars and Surgical First Assistants (SFAs).
  • Contribute to the strategic review, development, and continuous improvement of clinical services through active participation within the multidisciplinary team.
  • Lead the SFA team in theatres and provide leadership and support for their development and managerial needs.
  • Lead on the implementation of a clearly defined, integrated approach to patient care, promoting innovative treatments and evidence-based practice to achieve high standards of clinical excellence.
  • Work collaboratively with patients, their families, and the wider multidisciplinary team to support shared decision-making and ensure care is person-centred and aligned with individual needs and preferences.
  • Provide operational and professional leadership for the Surgical First Assistant team, including responsibility for training and development, continuing professional development (CPD), competency maintenance, attendance management, and workforce planning.

Job responsibilities

Person Specification
Qualifications and registration
Essential
  • Current professional registration with the NMC or HCPC.
  • MSc Surgical Care Practice accredited by the Royal College of Surgeons (or equivalent recognised qualification).
  • Evidence of robotic surgery training and competency relevant to the da Vinci Surgical System.
  • Surgical First Assistant qualification.

Desirable
  • Teaching, mentorship, assessor, or equivalent educational qualification.

Knowledge and Experience
Essential
  • Demonstrate an up to date and detailed knowledge of relevant guidelines and clinical practice in the speciality
  • Indications and contraindications for robotic surgery
  • Understanding of the role and responsibilities as robotic bedside assistant.

Desirable
  • Effective leadership skills relevant to role (i.e. demonstrated ability to provide clinical professional leadership).
  • Exprience of working as a bedside surgical assistant in any of the relevant specialities
  • oWorks under own initiative with strong organisational skills and ability to achieve to deadlines

Skills and abilities
Essential
  • oRobot docking and de-docking.
  • oWound closure (deep and superficial)
  • oEmergency scenarios: cardiac arrest, haemorrhage, system/instrument failure.
  • oCorrect patient positioning for a variety of operations. Demonstrate correct and safe port placement, and knowledge of port placement philosophy.
