This post is appointed on a fixed-term basis for the primary purpose of providing structured training and supervised clinical development. While you will contribute to service delivery, the overarching purpose of the post is to provide defined educational opportunities, supervised clinical practice, and experience aligned to the relevant specialty training curriculum

Main duties of the job

• This appointment is for one or more Senior Clinical Fellows in Haematology, based at Southampton General Hospital
• You will join the department of Clinical Haematology and participate in the management of patients with haematological disorders
• You will work within consultant-led subspecialty teams, alongside specialty registrars and other senior clinical fellows
• There may be the option to contribute to the haematology on-call rota depending on experience.
• The posts are open to individuals with experience in internal medicine and/or clinical haematology.
• The posts are available for 12-24 months initially to cover current service vacancies and will be based within subspecialty haematology teams. There may be opportunity to tailor to fit the interests of candidates, including those looking to pursue a career in haematology as well as those post-CCT or who have undertaken haematology training overseas who wish to obtain specific subspecialty experience.

Job description
Job responsibilities

• This is a whole time/maximum part-time trust fellow. Part time or job share applicants will be considered for those candidates unable to work full time for personal reasons. If such a person is appointed, modification of the job description will be discussed in consultation with the department.
• These posts are designed to mirror the existing ST training programme, and opportunities for education and supervision will be identical, including allocation of an educational supervisor for the duration of the post.
• There is flexibility to tailor the rotations to focus on areas of clinical interest of the candidates.
• The principal duties of the posts will include:
  • To undertake care of haematology inpatients and outpatients under the supervision of the haematology senior medical teams. This will be through participation in the Haematology Specialist Registrar rotation, rotating through one or more of the subspecialty teams:
    • Acute leukaemia, allogeneic stem cell transplant and CAR-T
    • Lymphoma and lymphoid malignancy including autologous stem cell transplants and CAR-T
    • Myeloma, myeloid and general haematology including autologous stem cell transplants
    • Haemostasis, thrombosis and immune haematology
    • Red cell haematology and transfusion
    • Laboratory haematology
    • Paediatric haematology
    • Consultative and liaison haematology
  • To undertake procedures relevant to haematology, including bone marrow biopsy, intrathecal chemotherapy and tunnelled central catheter removal. Where necessary, appropriate training and supervision will be provided.
  • To refer to other specialists as required in order to provide optimal patient care
  • To provide specialist haematology advice to other medical and surgical teams, as well as general practitioners. Senior supervision is provided where necessary, depending on the experience of the post-holder
  • To participate in the haematology Specialist Registrar on-call rota, where experience allows.
  • To undertake care of patients undergoing clinical trials, showing evidence of training and understanding of Good Clinical Practice. Where required, appropriate training in clinical trial protocols will be provided
  • To engage with the specialty trainee education programme, including attendance at regular educational meetings. The post-holders will be expected to maintain an educational portfolio mirroring their equivalent stage of training.
  • To engage in the departments clinical governance programme, including, for example, audit, clinic incident reporting and quality meetings.
  • To participate in laboratory activities, including reporting of blood and bone marrow specimens and attendance at diagnostic MDTs. Where necessary, appropriate training and supervision will be provided. The extent of participation will depend on the post-holder's experience.
  • Where possible, to participate in the collection and analysis of local data with a view to preparing and submitting papers for publication.
  • Cross-cover to other specialty teams within haematology during both planned and unplanned absence.

Education and Training Opportunities
The haematology education and training programme was overhauled in 2021 following the launch of the JRCTB Haematology Curriculum. This post is designed to mirror the training programme of deanery appointed resident doctors, and opportunities for education and supervision will be identical, including allocation of an educational supervisor for the duration of the post and access to study leave and self-development time. There is a weekly Wessex-wide teaching programme encompassing clinical and laboratory haematology plus specific laboratory morphology sessions for more junior trainees to gain laboratory competencies.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
Appointment will be made under local contractual terms and conditions of service for Trust appointed fellow doctors and dentists. Applicants requiring Skilled Worker sponsorship should ensure they meet the Home Office application criteria prior to submitting an application.

Successful candidates will have an educational framework equivalent to training grade doctors, and there will be a named educational supervisor assigned at the start of the post. The opportunity for Continued Professional Development (CPD) is highly supported and encouraged by the Trust, with options available to take study leave.

Grades for Trust appointed fellows will be paid a basic salary at a nodal pay point linked to the grade, at the rate set out in the National Medical and Dental pay circular. Basic salary plus any additional remuneration (as applicable) for hours set out in the doctors work schedule (e.g. additional hours, weekend allowance, and any hours which attract enhanced pay) Salary will be assessed based on experience and skills. Essential

• MBBS or equivalent medical qualification
• Eligible for GMC registration with a licence to practise
• MRCP Part 1 or higher specialty membership exam (or equivalent)
• MRCP Part 2 or higher specialty membership exam (or equivalent)
• Appropriate knowledge base, and ability to apply sound clinical judgement to problems
• Internal Medicine experience for at least 12 months OR Clinical Haematology experience for at least 6 months
• Experience of out of hours and emergency care
