Job description
Job Summary
Join us in shaping a specialist service for young adults. Are you passionate about supporting young people during one of the most significant transitions in their lives? We are seeking an enthusiastic and skilled Clinical Psychologist to join our Central Suffolk Young Adult Mental Health Service (YAMHS) based in Stowmarket. The service supports young adults aged 18-25 experiencing moderate to severe mental health difficulties and provides psychologically informed, recovery-focused care during the critical transition into adulthood. We are keen to attract applicants with a strong interest in working with young adults and will consider applications from newly qualified Clinical Psychologists through a structured preceptorship pathway to Band 8a.

About the Service
YAMHS is a secondary care mental health service specifically designed to meet the needs of young adults aged 18-25 years. The service recognises the unique developmental challenges faced by young people as they navigate transitions in relationships, education, employment, identity and independence alongside mental health difficulties.

Main Duties of the Job
As a Clinical Psychologist within YAMHS, you will:
  • Provide specialist psychological assessment, formulation and intervention for young adults presenting with complex mental health needs.
  • Offer a range of evidence-based psychological therapies, drawing upon your specialist training and expertise.
  • Work collaboratively with service users, families and partner agencies.
  • Provide psychological consultation and advice to MDT colleagues.
  • Contribute to multidisciplinary assessments, risk management and care planning.
  • Deliver teaching, training and supervision to colleagues and trainees where appropriate.
  • Participate in service development, quality improvement and evaluation initiatives.
  • Support the ongoing development of psychologically informed practice across the service.

Applicants appointed via a Band 7 preceptorship pathway will be supported through a structured development programme with dedicated supervision and clear objectives to progress to Band 8a competencies.

Person Specification
Qualifications
Essential
  • Post-graduate degree (or its equivalent if trained prior to 1996) in clinical psychology, accredited by BPS
  • Registered as a practitioner psychologist with the Health Care Professions Council (HCPC)

Experience
Essential
  • Experience working as a qualified clinical psychologist (Band 7) and able to evidence appropriate knowledge and experience in practice to enable the post holder to clinically supervise trainee clinical psychologist
  • Experience of working with a range of complex and challenging behaviours and exercising full clinical responsibility for psychological treatment.
  • Experience of supervision and teaching.
Desirable
  • Experience of clinical work in a setting relevant to the post

Knowledge
Essential
  • Doctor level knowledge of research design and methodology, including complex multivariate data analysis.
