Job description

Job summary
The role offers the opportunity to be involved in many aspects of service delivery. You will participate in multidisciplinary clinics, implement a psychological screening programme for children, young people and families attending medical reviews, and provide specialist psychological assessment and interventions. You will also provide consultation and advice to multidisciplinary colleagues.

The post-holder will undertake cognitive assessments for children who are at risk of stroke. These assessments play an important role in informing multidisciplinary decision-making regarding suitability for stem cell transplant, enabling families and clinicians to make informed decisions about this potentially life changing treatment.

Main duties of the job
An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Band 7 Clinical Psychologist to join the Department of Paediatric Psychology at the Leeds Teaching Hospital NHS Trust, providing specialist psychology input for children and young people with sickle cell disease and thalassemia. The postholder will be based at Leeds General Infirmary, working closely with the Paediatric Haematology Multidisciplinary team whilst being professionally based within the department Paediatric Psychology.

Temporary funding for this post has been provided by the Haemoglobinopathies Coordinating Centre (HCC), reflecting the growing recognition of the importance of integrated psychological care within specialist services. As such, the postholder will work collaboratively across the regional network providing specialist psychological input to both specialist haematology teams (SHT) and local haematology teams (LTH), helping to improve equity of access for children and families across the region.

Our patient population is richly diverse, with many children and families coming from black African, black Caribbean, South Asian, and Middle Eastern communities. Many families experience additional challenges associated with health inequalities, racial disparities, discrimination, stigma and socioeconomic disadvantage. We are looking for a psychologist with a commitment to delivering equitable and inclusive care.

The successful candidate will be supported to access training with initial dedicated funding. We welcome applications from final year DClinPsy trainees who are due to qualify. Candidates who do not yet meet full essential criteria for Band 7, including HCPC registration, may be considered for appointment at Band 6 until registration is obtained and the requirements for progression to Band 7 are met.
