Job description

Behaviour Teaching Assistant – SEMH Provision
Full Time | September Start | Temporary to Permanent

Teaching Personnel are recruiting on behalf of a specialist secondary SEMH provision in Blackburn for a Behaviour Teaching Assistant to join their team from September. This is a full-time position, initially through the agency, with the opportunity to secure a permanent contract following a successful temporary period.

The school provides a nurturing and highly supportive learning environment for pupils aged 11–16 with Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs. Many pupils have experienced barriers to education and require consistent, patient adults who can build positive relationships, promote engagement, and support emotional regulation. The school delivers a broad curriculum alongside therapeutic approaches, helping pupils develop both academically and personally.

This is an excellent opportunity for individuals with experience supporting children or young people with challenging behaviour, whether gained in education, youth work, care, residential settings, coaching, or similar environments.

The Role

  • Supporting pupils with SEMH needs both within the classroom and during intervention sessions.
  • Building positive, trusting relationships to encourage engagement with learning.
  • Managing challenging behaviour using calm, consistent and restorative approaches.
  • Supporting pupils to regulate emotions and develop positive coping strategies.
  • Working closely with teachers and the wider pastoral team to implement behaviour support plans.
  • Encouraging independence, confidence and social development.
  • Maintaining a safe, structured and inclusive learning environment.

The Ideal Candidate

  • Experience supporting individuals with challenging behaviour or additional needs.
  • Confident behaviour management skills and the ability to remain calm under pressure.
  • Strong communication and relationship-building skills.
  • Patient, resilient and adaptable with a positive attitude.
  • Experience within an education setting is desirable but not essential.
  • A genuine passion for supporting young people to achieve positive outcomes.

What We Offer

  • Full-time role starting in September.
  • Temporary to permanent opportunity.
  • Competitive weekly pay through Teaching Personnel.
  • Ongoing CPD and specialist SEN training.
  • Dedicated consultant providing ongoing support throughout your placement.
  • Opportunity to develop a long-term career within specialist education.

This role is subject to an enhanced DBS check registered on the Update Service (or willingness to obtain one), satisfactory references, and all safer recruitment checks.

If you are passionate about making a lasting difference to the lives of young people with SEMH needs and are looking for a rewarding long-term opportunity, we would love to hear from you.

All applicants will require the appropriate qualifications and training for this role. Please see the FAQ’s on the Teaching Personnel website for details.
All pay rates quoted will be inclusive of 12.07% statutory holiday pay. This advert is for a temporary position. In some cases, the option to make this role permanent may become available at a later date.
