Job description

Specialist Grade - Medical Retina (Ophthalmology) This is a 10 PA appointment for a Specialist in Medical Retina within Ophthalmology. The post will be available from September 2026 and will deliver 10 PAs supporting the Medical Retina team (Ms Mohla, Mr Mukherjee, and Ms Downey). The post-holder will provide specialist clinical care for patients with medical retinal disorders, including intravitreal therapies and retinal laser treatment. There will be opportunities to contribute to service development, clinical governance, teaching and training, audit, research, and the continuous improvement of Medical Retina and urgent retinal care pathways. The post will be based cross-site at St Jamess University Hospital and Seacroft Hospital. Main duties of the job As a Specialist Grade Ophthalmologist in Medical Retina, you will deliver high-quality specialist retinal care, support urgent eye services, and contribute to the continued development of our Medical Retina service. You will work as part of a multidisciplinary team, teaching, mentoring, undertaking research and quality improvement, and shaping innovative services that improve patient outcomes. Key responsibilities * Provide specialist clinical care for medical retinal disorders, including intravitreal therapy and retinal laser treatment. * Contribute to urgent and emergency retinal pathways, supporting timely sight‑saving care. * Participate in service development and improvement of Medical Retina pathways, including integration with urgent eye care services. * Lead teaching and mentoring activities, supervising and supporting ophthalmology trainees and fellows. * Engage in clinical governance, audit, quality improvement, and risk‑management activities to support evidence‑based practice. * Collaborate academically and with research initiatives, supporting innovation and clinical excellence. * Work across ophthalmology subspecialties, primary care, and the wider Integrated Care System (ICS). * Maintain a structured 10 PA job plan incorporating clinics, virtual reviews, and protected Supporting Professional Activities (SPA) time. * Operate within one of Europe’s largest teaching hospital trusts, utilizing leading expertise, technology, and a diverse patient population. Qualifications and experience Applicants should have completed a minimum of 12 years’ medical experience (continuous or aggregate) since the primary medical qualification, with at least 6 years in a relevant speciality at the Specialty Doctor or closed SAS grades (or equivalent). Prior experience in retinal care, intravitreal injections, or retinal laser treatment is required. You must also meet the criteria set out in the Specialist Generic Capabilities Framework.
