Job Description

Electronics Technician

Wotton under Edge

Up to £34,000

Renishaw’s Encoder Products Division (EPD) designs and supplies cutting-edge position feedback technology to the world’s precision measurement, automation, and manufacturing industries. It is highly likely that something you own contains a part or device that was manufactured with the help of one of Renishaw’s encoder products.

EPD is made up of engineers, scientists and technicians all working together to produce market leading products for sale around the world. We start with cutting edge optical, algorithm and circuit design, developing our own ASICs and sensors where required; we then use innovative mechanical engineering to turn our core technology into a range of desirable products for our broad customer base.

Working closely with colleagues in our manufacturing division, we develop manufacturing and assembly processes and software to deliver quality products by the hundreds of thousands that in turn, perform reliably and repeatedly to sub-micron accuracies for our customers.

An Electronics Development Technician is required to support engineering teams developing products, test equipment and manufacturing systems. The successful candidate will be responsible for the design, assembly, documentation and commissioning of electronic equipment, ranging from cable assemblies and interface boxes through to bespoke laboratory and production equipment. Working closely with engineers, they will ensure equipment is built to a high standard and is suitable for compliance assessment and safe use.

Responsibilities

  • Build, modify, test and commission cable assemblies, wiring looms, interface boxes, test equipment and other electronic systems.

  • Produce and maintain wiring diagrams, assembly instructions, build records, bills of materials and other technical documentation.

  • Carry out fault-finding, diagnosis and repair of electrical and electronic equipment.

  • Work with engineers to develop practical electronic solutions for development and production environments.

  • Support EMC, electrical safety, verification, validation and compliance activities for equipment and test rigs.

  • Liaise with suppliers regarding components, enclosures, cables and custom assemblies.

Essential requirements

  • Practical experience building electronic assemblies and cable harnesses.

  • Good soldering skills and experience of electronic assembly workmanship standards.

  • Ability to read and create wiring diagrams and engineering drawings.

  • Experience using standard electronic test equipment such as multimeters, oscilloscopes and power supplies.

  • Experience fault-finding electronic systems.

  • Good documentation and record-keeping skills.

  • Familiarity with Microsoft Office and technical documentation systems.

  • Ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.

Desirable requirements

  • HNC/HND, apprenticeship or equivalent qualification in Electronics Engineering or a related discipline.

  • Experience designing simple electronic circuits and interface boxes.

  • Familiarity with EMC requirements and good wiring/layout practices.

  • Experience supporting UKCA/CE compliance activities.

  • Experience with electrical safety assessments and risk assessments.

  • Experience creating cable schedules, wiring schematics and bills of materials.

  • Familiarity with PCB assembly and prototype build techniques.

Person specification

The successful applicant will be a practical, hands-on problem solver with excellent attention to detail. They will be comfortable working between design, build and documentation activities and will take pride in producing robust, well-documented equipment that can be safely operated and maintained.
