The Oxford University Hospitals NHS Trust is one of the largest NHS teaching trusts in the country, offering a wide range of general and specialist clinical services. We are recruiting an enthusiastic, motivated consultant to join the Oxford Centre for Genomic Medicine (OxGEM) within the OUH NHS Trust. The role involves delivering compassionate clinical genetics care, leading MDTs, and developing special interests such as Cardiac Genetics. Main duties of the job The post-holder will be based at OxGEM on the Nuffield Orthopaedic Hospital site and will provide general and cancer genetics services across Oxfordshire, Berkshire, Buckinghamshire and part of Wiltshire. The role includes 8.5 PA direct clinical care and 1.5 PA supporting professional activity, with flexibility for peripheral clinics. Detailed job description and main responsibilities Clinical activities The core activity is direct clinical care in general clinical genetics, including triage of referrals, face‑to‑face, video and telephone consultations, telephone or letter advice to GPs, and virtual follow‑up. The consultant participates in multidisciplinary meetings, departmental meetings, and supports mainstreaming of whole genome sequencing. Support to resident medical doctors in training Provide clinical supervision and education for specialist registrars and ACFs within the department. Out‑patient clinics Run outpatient clinic lists with consultants, SpRs and genetic counsellors, supported by clinic staff. The job plan typically includes 84 clinics per year. In‑patient cover Cover urgent ward referrals and advice on a rota basis, approximately 1 in 7, with no out‑of‑hours on‑call. Liaison with the genetics laboratory Attend weekly joint MDT meetings with laboratory scientists to review test results. Clinical Audit Participate in regular departmental and regional audits, including SWOB and national genetics audits. Support of mainstream clinicians Engage in mainstreaming activities such as teaching, training and supporting the return of genomic laboratory results. Supporting Professional Activity Allocate time for audit participation, trust appraisal, annual job planning, and other professional development activities for revalidation. Qualifications * MRCP(UK) or equivalent * Entry on the GMC Specialist Register in Clinical Genetics (CCT within 6 months of interview or CSER) * GMC registration * Higher medical degree (MD or PhD) or equivalent Experience * Training in Clinical Genetics to specialist level or equivalent * High level of competence in managing complex genetic cases * Evidence of consultant‑level decision making and management of complex clinical problems Skills and knowledge * Excellent leadership skills; ability to lead a clinical team at consultant level * Effective administrative and time‑management skills, including training in clinical management * Evidence of significant contribution to successful teamwork * Good spoken and written English; highly developed communication and interpersonal skills * Experience of formal and informal teaching and training * Effective and sustained contribution to clinical governance, clinical risk management, and audit activities * Interest in research * Peer‑reviewed publications COVID‑19: COVID‑19 vaccination is encouraged but not a condition of employment.
