Job summary
We are seeking an experienced and motivated Safeguarding Specialist Nurse to join our Community Safeguarding Service. This is a key role supporting the Trust in meeting its statutory and legal safeguarding responsibilities, while driving forward high-quality safeguarding practice across services.

About You
  • Be a Registered Nurse with a Specialist Community Public Health Nursing (SCPHN) qualification (or equivalent)
  • Demonstrate a strong working knowledge of safeguarding legislation, policy, and best practice
  • Show evidence of ongoing professional development, including safeguarding training
  • Be confident in working collaboratively and influencing practice across teams

Main duties of the job
Reporting into the Named Nurse/Community Safeguarding Service Lead, some of your responsibilities will include:
  • The Safeguarding Specialist Nurse plays a key leadership role in supporting staff with complex safeguarding cases by providing expert advice, supervision, and training.
  • They act as a critical point of professional oversight, offering direction, scrutiny, challenge, and escalation where required to ensure safe and effective practice.
  • The role involves active participation in multi-agency safeguarding processes, including the Sheffield Integrated Front Door (Safeguarding Hub) and MARAC, where the nurse contributes to information sharing, risk assessment, and joint decision-making. They are a key health representative and decision-maker in multidisciplinary work.
  • Additional responsibilities include supporting community staff with legal statements for care proceedings, contributing to safeguarding audits and reviews, and attending relevant internal and external meetings. Overall, the postholder ensures high-quality safeguarding practice through collaboration, expert guidance, and accountability.

Qualifications & Training
Essential
  • NMC Registered
  • Registered Nurse with SCPHN qualification: School nursing/Health visiting or equivalent
  • Ongoing professional development - includes safeguarding
  • Safeguarding supervision qualification, or equivalent
  • Leadership and management training or equivalent

Desirable
  • Master's degree - includes safeguarding or working towards
  • Post graduate safeguarding training
  • Community Specialist practitioner

Experience
Essential
  • Significant post registration experience as a Specialist Community Public Health Nurse or equivalent and substantial recent experience in safeguarding children and adults.
  • Experience safeguarding supervision delivery or willingness to develop knowledge and skills required to deliver effective restorative safeguarding supervision

Desirable
  • Experience of Leading a Team
  • Experience/involvement in undertaking safeguarding reviews
  • Experience of teaching, mentoring and facilitating professional development of staff.

Knowledge
Essential
  • Knowledge of statutory guidance and legislation regarding protection of children and adults;
  • Awareness of the complex issues involved when working across organisations and disciplines

Desirable
  • Experience /knowledge of Government initiatives in respect of children with disabilities and looked after children
  • Participation/involvement in safeguarding reviews and learning lessons to improve practice

Skills
Essential
  • Adaptable professional with strong learning, problem-solving, and decision-making skills, applying evidence-based practice.
  • Excellent communicator and team player who builds effective relationships, works under pressure, and manages priorities to meet deadlines.
