Job description
Job Summary
The Leeds Spinal Unit based at Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust would like to formally invite trainees who are interested to join our long established fellowship programme. These posts will be based at the Leeds General Infirmary (LGI). Successful candidates are expected to commence from August 2027 to August 2028. The length of fellowship is 12 months.

Main Duties of the Job
The post is suitable for a committed spinal surgical trainee who wish to obtain extra experience in spinal surgery with interest in clinical research in spinal surgery. The successful candidate will join a department of 12 Specialist Spinal Surgery consultants, two 3-4 specialty trainees, and a Clinical Nurse Specialist.

Job Responsibilities
The Spinal Unit in Leeds is a busy regional spinal unit receiving more than 100 new referrals per week covering a population of over 2.5 million. The post-holder will be contributing to the duties of both elective admissions and acute spinal surgery on-call cover including supporting the regional Major Trauma Centre which is based in the LGI. The clinical work will involve managing a wide range of spinal conditions including deformity, lumbar and cervical degenerative conditions, trauma, infection and tumour. Opportunities will also be available to gain experience in the management of spinal injuries patients at the LGI. Research work will involve a main project and there will be an expectation to achieve at least one publication in a peer reviewed journal.

Why You Should Join Our Team
You will be working with Spinal surgery consultants, spinal surgery fellows. It is planned for the post to be 80% clinical and 20% research. Any candidate who is unavailable, for personal reasons, to work full time will be eligible to be considered for the post; if such a person is appointed, modifications of the job plan will be discussed on a personal basis with the Trust’s in-consultation. Salary will be the on the appropriate point on the StR payscale. Candidates must be fully registered with the General Medical Council and hold a license to practice at the time of application.
