Job description
Payroll AssistantWe are searching for an experienced Payroll Assistant

Make an Impact at RSM UK

RSM is one of the world’s largest networks of audit, tax and consulting firms, supporting middle-market businesses with premium service and practical, insight-led advice. Our consulting team brings together specialists across business transformation, forensic, deal services, restructuring, finance function support, and risk and governance, working collaboratively to help clients address challenges, achieve their goals and build sustainable, future-fit businesses.

Pay and People (PAP) sits within our Finance Function Support department and delivers payroll and HR software and solutions to a wide range of clients, from entrepreneurial businesses to international organisations across sectors including manufacturing, retail and hospitality. The team combines expertise across employment tax, employment legal, payroll, HR, equity reward and global mobility, offering clients a seamless, multidisciplinary service while creating a collaborative and supportive environment for our people.

As a Payroll Assistant, you’ll join a welcoming and growing team, gaining hands-on client experience quickly while working towards owning your own portfolio. You’ll receive on-the-job support, access to internal training and mentoring, and work towards the Payroll Administrator Level 3 qualification, typically completed within 12–18 months. With excellent hybrid working arrangements, offices in Brentwood, Grangemouth, Liverpool and Reading, and a culture that supports development and fresh thinking, this is a strong opportunity to build valuable payroll expertise and progress your career.

You’ll make an impact by:

  • Assisting with the accurate and timely in-house payroll production for various clients in accordance with statutory regulations and payroll deadlines.
  • Gaining knowledge of statutory and legislative regulations, including UK Tax legislation.
  • Applying changes to client payroll records including, starters, leavers, absences, salary changes, pension deductions and various other pay adjustments.
  • Processing payments on behalf of our clients.
  • Submitting reports to HMRC in line with statutory deadlines.
  • Assisting with client enquiries and provide high standard of communication.
  • Working towards owning your own portfolio of clients where you will process the end-to-end payroll and build strong relationships with your clients.
  • Creating and running reports for clients, using our inhouse systems and Microsoft Excel.
  • Assisting with client billing and month end procedures.
  • Carrying out other duties which are within the scope, spirit and purpose of the job, the title of the role and its grading, as requested by the line manager or Head of Department.

What we are looking for:

As this opportunity provides full training and development, the ideal applicant will have strong numerical abilities and proven experience with MS Office, particularly a basic practical knowledge of Excel.

We welcome applicants with prior work experience in another field, wishing to transform their career, as well as school-leavers and graduates. If the latter, you will have 5 GCSEs graded 4-9 or an equivalent qualification graded A-C. An aptitude and passion for excellent customer service are essential whilst prior exposure to payroll or HR is advantageous but not a requirement.

  • Strong attention to detail.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, both written and verbal with individuals at all levels.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a collaborative team.
  • Good organisation and prioritisation skills, ensuring stringent deadlines are met.
  • Flexibility, adaptability, and problem-solving abilities.
  • Discretion and ability to maintain confidentiality.

What we can offer you:

We recognise that our people are our most important assets. That’s why we offer a flexible reward and benefits package that will help you have fulfilling experience, both in and out of work.

  • Study support towards the Payroll Administrator Level 3 qualification.
  • Hybrid and Flexible working.
  • 25 Days Holiday (with the option of purchasing additional days).
  • Lifestyle, Health, and Wellbeing including financial wellbeing benefits such as financial tools, electric car scheme and access to a virtual GP.
  • Access to a suite of 300+ courses on demand developed by our inhouse Talent Development team.
