Due to secondment, we have a 12 month fixed term vacancy for a 30hr week Band 6 Learning Disability Nurse, (Senior Practitioner) within the Wirral Community Learning Disabilities Team (CLDT), based in Leasowe on the Wirral.
The CLDT is an established and progressive team comprising of Nurses, Occupational Therapists, Physiotherapists, Psychologists and Psychiatry.
You will work autonomously, managing a defined case load of adults with learning disabilities, complex health needs, neurodevelopmental difficulties and / or behaviours of concern, working in 3 core areas: direct clinical,training and development of others and project work to help develop services offered to people with learning disabilities.
Main duties of the jobYour enthusiasm for providing a high-quality service and addressing health inequalities for people with learning disabilities will be matched by your ability to work collaboratively with not only the adults we support, but also their advocates/families and other identified stakeholders.
An excellent understanding of the issues adults with learning disabilities may experience is essential for this post as is a good understanding of Positive Behaviour Support, Mental Health, Positive Risk Assessment and Case Management.
In addition to developed clinical skills, the successful applicants will demonstrate skills in sharing knowledge through training and consultation and be able to modify and evaluate practice in line with clinical and service needs in addition to supervision of band 5 nurses, clinical support workers and student nurses.

Person SpecificationQualificationsEssential- First level nurse. RNLD/RNMH/ RMN (degree level)
- Evidence of post registration module training in specialist area to diploma/degree level e.g. physical health in learning disabilities module; epilepsy module; dementia module.
- Evidence of post registration training in e.g. - challenging behaviour - autism - epilepsy
- Demonstrate commitment to ongoing learning & development
Desirable- Nurse prescribing qualification.
Knowledge and ExpertiseEssential- Ability to assess/Plan/Evaluate care to clients and carers.
- Ability to participate in and develop nursing practice
- Support clients in crisis.
- Excellent record keeping.
- Ability to chair meetings and lead a team e.g. CPA.
- Deliver training to other professionals and services
- Special interests related to current service developments (e.g. epilepsy; challenging behaviour; autism etc).
ExperienceEssential- A reasonable amount of post qualifying experience of working with adults with a Learning Disability in a community setting
- Direct experience of working with clients with complex needs i.e. challenging behaviour, epilepsy, mental health problems, continuing health care.
- Clinical supervision of staff
- Delivery of training to other staff, service users and carers.
- Positive attitude to people with LD.
- Awareness of current issues
- Awareness of relevant legislation and good practice relating to learning disabilities (Valuing People; Mental Health Act; Mansell 3 etc).
- Appreciation of governance
Desirable- Participation in service developments.
- Experience in delivery of quality initiatives.
