Behaviour Mentor – Oxford

Location: Oxford, Oxfordshire

Salary: £100 – £140 per day (dependent on experience) / £22,000 – £27,000 per annum equivalent

Contract Type: Full-Time, Term Time Only

Start Date: September 2026 / ASAP

About the Role

Wayman Education is currently seeking a resilient, empathetic, and proactive Behaviour Mentor to join a supportive secondary school in Oxford.

In this vital pastoral and support role, you will work directly with students who face social, emotional, and mental health (SEMH) challenges or exhibit barrier-to-learning behaviours. Acting as a positive role model, you will deliver targeted 1-to-1 and small group interventions designed to help pupils manage their emotions, improve attendance, build resilience, and successfully re-engage with classroom learning.

Key Responsibilities

  • Targeted Mentoring: Provide dedicated 1-to-1 and small group mentoring sessions for students struggling with behaviour, emotional regulation, or low academic engagement.

  • De-escalation & Support: Implement de-escalation strategies and follow individual behaviour plans to manage challenging classroom situations calmly and effectively.

  • Progress Tracking: Monitor and record student behaviour patterns, attendance improvements, and pastoral progress, reporting regularly to the SENCO and Pastoral Team.

  • Collaborative Working: Partner with class teachers, pastoral leads, and parents to ensure a consistent, supportive approach to student development.

  • Positive Re-engagement: Support students in developing coping mechanisms, self-esteem, and social skills to encourage positive integration into mainstream lessons.

Requirements

  • Experience: Previous experience working as a Behaviour Mentor, Youth Worker, Learning Support Assistant, or Pastoral Assistant in a UK school or youth setting.

  • Skills: Exceptional de-escalation, conflict-resolution, and active listening skills, with a patient, resilient, and non-judgmental approach.

  • Desirable Qualifications: Team Teach, MAPA, or accredited de-escalation training is highly advantageous.

  • Communication: Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to build rapport and trust with disengaged or vulnerable young people.

  • Vetting: An Enhanced DBS check registered on the Update Service (or willingness to complete a new application).

What Wayman Education Offers

  • Competitive daily rates paid weekly via PAYE.

  • Dedicated recruitment consultant guidance throughout your placement.

  • Access to ongoing professional development and training courses.

  • Generous £250 referral bonus scheme for successful candidate recommendations.
