A respected independent school in Exeter is seeking an inspirational Head of Computer Science to lead its successful Computing provision. This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced teacher or current middle leader to drive excellence in Computer Science, inspire colleagues and students, and further develop an innovative curriculum in a school where technology and digital learning are highly valued.

About the Role

The successful candidate will lead the Computer Science department, ensuring the delivery of an ambitious and engaging curriculum across Key Stages 3–5. You will be responsible for maintaining high standards of teaching and learning, supporting departmental staff, and promoting a culture of innovation, creativity and academic excellence.

Working closely with senior leaders and colleagues across the STEM faculty, you will play a key role in developing curriculum initiatives, leading enrichment opportunities, and ensuring outstanding outcomes for students.

Key Responsibilities

• Lead and manage the Computer Science department, promoting excellence in teaching, learning and student achievement.

• Teach Computer Science across KS3–KS5, including GCSE and A-Level classes.

• Design, implement and review an ambitious Computer Science curriculum that reflects current industry developments and best practice.

• Monitor student progress and attainment, using assessment data to drive continuous improvement.

• Lead, mentor and support members of the department through coaching, performance management and professional development.

• Develop and manage departmental resources, budgets and strategic priorities.

• Promote enrichment opportunities including coding clubs, robotics, competitions, hackathons and digital innovation projects.

• Work collaboratively with colleagues across the STEM faculty and contribute to whole-school initiatives.

• Ensure high standards of safeguarding, behaviour, inclusion and student wellbeing throughout the department.

The Ideal Candidate

• Degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a closely related discipline.

• Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) or an equivalent recognised teaching qualification.

• Proven experience teaching Computer Science at KS3–KS5, including GCSE and A-Level.

• Previous leadership or departmental management experience, or the ambition and capability to step into a leadership role.

• Excellent subject knowledge with a passion for computing, programming and emerging technologies.

• Strong leadership, organisational and communication skills.

• A collaborative approach with the ability to inspire colleagues and motivate students.

• Commitment to continuous improvement, curriculum innovation and outstanding student outcomes.

• Legal right to work in the UK.
