However, applicants who do not currently meet the full requirements for the Band 5 role are encouraged to apply and, if successful, will be appointed under Annex 21 rules. To be eligible for a Band 5 Annex 21, they will need a minimum of a Level 3 (A-levels etc) qualification. Then, through a combination of on-the-job experience and external study, they will need to develop a portfolio to obtain registration either as a Registered Clinical Technologist (RCT) or via the Academy for Healthcare Science Practitioner Training Programme (AHCS PTP). The Annex 21 rules mean the successful applicant will be supported by a development plan. During the first year, payment will be 60% of the top rate of Band 5 pay, 65% in the second year, 70% in the third year and 75% in the fourth year. Following successfully achieving registration with the RCT or AHCS PTP, the post holder will then be employed at Band 5 at the minimum point on the scale. Support and supervision will be provided in order to develop the successful applicant to the Band 5 role. Failure to achieve the qualification in the designated time frame could result in re-deployment.

As part of the Annex 21 process, there is no financial penalty to those who apply for this role where the percentage will cause a reduction in pay, subsequently a local protection would be put in place until the pay has caught up.

The department provides a broad range of complex, routine and non-routine activities including servicing, repair, calibration, safety testing, quality assurance, evaluation, commissioning, decommissioning, planned preventive maintenance of clinical equipment and devices.
