Job description

Job Summary The post will be part of the Surgical Junior Doctor tier at University Hospital Llandough. The successful applicant will share on‑call duties and gain exposure to a wide range of surgical conditions including orthopaedics, breast, ENT, maxillofacial, general surgery, urology and gynaecology, while being fully supported by an appropriate junior and senior team. The post also provides access to clinical supervision and internal educational and training opportunities and involves working across general surgical ward areas to support safe delivery of care to the wards and acute, unselected surgical on‑call rota. Posts available from 7 August 2026. Responsibilities The role involves shared on‑call duties with exposure to a variety of surgical specialties, supporting ward activities, participating in surgical wards, and pursuing continuing education and training. Gaining experience across general surgical ward areas and learning to support safe care delivery form the core service purpose of the position. Person Specification * Qualifications o MBBS or equivalent o Full GMC registration with a licence to practise * Desirable Qualifications o Intercalated degree o MSc or PhD o Academic excellence (prizes, merits, distinctions, etc.) o MRCS (UK) Part 1 * Experience o Clinical experience o Evidence of participation in research and clinical governance * Desirable Experience o Evidence of interest in day and short stay surgery * Skills o Evidence of effective team and multidisciplinary working o Effective and demonstrable communication skills in written and spoken English adequate to enable effective communication about medical topics with patients and colleagues o Up to date with current medical practices o Ability to take appropriate clinical decisions when necessary o Research and interests relevant to specialty o Values aligned to those of the Health Board * Desirable Skills o Audit o Teaching * Attitude / Aptitude o Motivated and efficient o Able to relate to patients, staff and medical colleagues o Flexible, caring and hard working * Desirable Attitude o Ability to speak Welsh * Other Requirements o Satisfactory immigration/right to work status o Satisfactory occupational health clearance o Satisfactory disclosure (DBS) check or equivalent Legal and Equality Statements This post is subject to the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act (Exceptions Order) 1975 and a Disclosure and Barring Service check will be required to verify any criminal convictions.
