Job description

Specialist Learning Support Practitioner (SEMH)

Location: Northampton (NN3)

Start: September, 2026

Type: Full-time (typically term-time or full-time depending on contract)

Role overview The successful candidate will support students with Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs, helping them access learning, achieve qualifications, and develop resilience and independence. The college's learning support service works with students who have EHCPs, autism, ADHD, dyslexia, mental health needs and other additional learning needs.

Key responsibilities

  • Deliver specialist SEMH support on a one-to-one and small-group basis.
  • Develop personalised strategies to overcome barriers to learning.
  • Support students with emotional regulation, resilience and positive behaviour.
  • Work alongside teaching staff, Learning Support Assistants and pastoral teams.
  • Contribute to EHCP reviews and target setting where appropriate.
  • Liaise with parents/carers and external agencies when required.
  • Promote safeguarding, inclusion and student wellbeing.

Ideal candidate

  • Experience supporting young people with SEMH needs.
  • Knowledge of trauma-informed practice and positive behaviour support.
  • Understanding of SEND, EHCPs and inclusive learning.
  • Excellent communication and relationship-building skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team.

The college places a strong emphasis on personalised learning support, wellbeing and helping students with additional needs—including SEMH, ADHD, autism and mental health challenges—achieve positive outcomes.

All pay rates quoted will be inclusive of 12.07% statutory holiday pay. This advert is for a temporary position. In some cases, the option to make this role permanent may become available at a later date.
