Salary

M1-M6 (£32,916-£45,352 per annum, dependent on experience) plus an annual Expert Payment of £2,000.

About the Role

We are seeking an inspirational and experienced SEN Science Lead to provide strategic leadership for Science across our education provision while delivering outstanding teaching to learners with Special Educational Needs (SEN).
This is a hybrid leadership and teaching role, combining classroom practice with dedicated leadership time. The successful candidate will lead the development of an engaging and ambitious Science curriculum, support colleagues to deliver high-quality teaching, and help improve outcomes for young people who require personalised educational pathways.
Working closely with senior leaders, Learning Managers and the wider Quality of Education team, the SEN Science Lead will drive continuous improvement in teaching, learning and curriculum design across multiple sites.

Key Responsibilities

Curriculum Leadership

• 
  Lead the strategic development, implementation and continuous improvement of the Science curriculum.
• 
  Ensure the curriculum is ambitious, inclusive and tailored to meet the diverse needs of learners with SEN.
• 
  Monitor curriculum quality to ensure compliance with statutory requirements and examination specifications.
• 
  Promote innovative teaching approaches that engage, challenge and motivate learners.

Teaching and Learning

• 
  Deliver high-quality Science lessons through one-to-one, small group and vocational learning environments.
• 
  Model excellent classroom practice and high expectations.
• 
  Differentiate teaching to meet individual learner needs and Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP) outcomes where appropriate.
• 
  Monitor learner progress and implement effective interventions to improve achievement.

Quality Assurance

• 
  Carry out lesson observations, learning walks and work scrutiny activities.
• 
  Analyse learner progress and assessment data to identify strengths and areas for development.
• 
  Support the implementation of quality improvement plans to raise standards across Science.
• 
  Promote consistency in planning, assessment and moderation practices.

Leadership and Staff Development

• 
  Coach, mentor and support colleagues to enhance teaching practice.
• 
  Deliver and contribute to professional development relating to Science and effective SEN teaching strategies.
• 
  Share best practice and contribute to cross-organisational collaboration.
• 
  Work alongside Curriculum Leads and senior leaders to improve educational outcomes.

Safeguarding and Compliance

• 
  Promote a culture where safeguarding is everyone's responsibility.
• 
  Ensure compliance with safeguarding, health and safety, and organisational policies and procedures.
• 
  Maintain accurate learner records and contribute to statutory reporting where required.
• 
  Champion equality, diversity and inclusion throughout the organisation.

Partnership Working

• 
  Build positive relationships with learners, families and external professionals.
• 
  Collaborate effectively with Learning Managers and multidisciplinary teams.
• 
  Support learners to develop confidence, resilience and independence through personalised education.

Person Specification

Essential

• 
  Qualified Teacher Status (QTS).
• 
  Experience teaching Science across secondary age ranges.
• 
  Strong knowledge of Science curriculum design, planning and assessment.
• 
  Excellent classroom management and behaviour support skills.
• 
  Demonstrable leadership, coaching or mentoring experience.
• 
  Excellent communication, organisation and interpersonal skills.
• 
  Commitment to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people.
• 
  Full UK driving licence, access to a vehicle and business insurance.
• 
  Willingness to travel between education sites.

Desirable

• 
  Experience working with children and young people with Special Educational Needs.
• 
  Previous subject leadership or middle leadership experience.
• 
  Experience delivering personalised or alternative education programmes.
• 
  Understanding of trauma-informed and relational approaches to education.

All pay rates quoted will be inclusive of 14.3% statutory holiday pay. This advert is for a temporary position. In some cases, the option to make this role permanent may become available at a later date.
