Job summary
University Hospitals Tees is a hospital group formed by North Tees and Hartlepool NHS Foundation Trust and South Tees Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. Radiotherapy Physics is situated at the James Cook University Hospital in South Tees.

Radiotherapy Physics is comprised of Treatment Planning, Machines and Computer Science. We are looking to recruit an outstanding individual to lead the Treatment Planning section. The successful candidate will be an experienced scientist working at consultant level with familiarity across all areas of radiotherapy physics and expertise in treatment planning, with competence to act as a Medical Physic Expert. The individual will be someone who can create a vision for the future of the treatment planning section and take the action needed to achieve those goals.

This is an exciting time for the radiotherapy service with a major capital equipment replacement program in progress. Alongside this the department has a strong track record of innovation and service development in areas such as SABR, advanced IGRT and innovative machine QA techniques. Current priorities include introducing online adaptive radiotherapy and increased usage of AI tools.

Main duties of the job
The postholder will provide scientific, clinical and professional leadership and has an essential role in ensuring safe, high-quality service delivery.

Key elements are:
  • developing and enacting a strategy for the treatment planning service at JCUH
  • managing resources & staff
  • overseeing academic, strategic & project work
  • working with senior Radiotherapy and Clinical Oncology colleagues to develop and deliver continual service improvement in treatment planning
  • provision of expert advice to medical and clinical staff
  • responsibility for compliance with statutory obligations

Knowledge and skills
Essential
  • Knowledge of current and emerging scientific and technological developments in radiotherapy
  • Excellent communication skills across all staff groups
  • Knowledge and understanding of current radiation legislation, knowledge of codes of practice and recommendations in quality assurance and radiation dosimetry
  • Knowledge of clinical oncology
  • Teaching and training skills
  • Ability to work both independently, as a member of the team and to lead a team

Desirable
  • Expertise in relevant fields demonstrated on the national or international stage
  • Ability to take new work through the publication process to well recognised journals or other platforms

Qualifications and training
Essential
  • A first- or second-class honours degree in physics
  • Masters level degree in medical physics or equivalent
  • Registered with the HCPC as a clinical scientist
  • Hold certificate as a Medical Physics Expert in radiotherapy

Desirable
  • A postgraduate degree (PhD / DClinSci)
  • Attendance at conferences or training courses intended to extend the breadth and depth of knowledge

Experience
Essential
  • Evidence of completed research and development projects
  • Evidence of career progression demonstrating both breadth and depth of experience

Desirable
  • Track record of development projects in treatment planning
  • Experience managing staff and projects
  • Experience of commissioning treatment planning systems, algorithms and planning techniques
