About the Role\n
We are seeking a dedicated and compassionate SEMH Teaching Assistant to join a specialist SEMH school in Chesterfield from September 2026.
\n
This is an excellent opportunity for an individual looking to build a rewarding career supporting children with additional needs. You will work with pupils aged 7-14 years who have Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs and may present with additional diagnoses and needs including Autism Spectrum Condition (ASC), ADHD, attachment difficulties, trauma-related behaviours, and communication challenges.

Working within a supportive and experienced team, you will play a key role in helping pupils overcome barriers to learning, develop positive relationships, improve emotional regulation, and achieve positive outcomes both academically and personally. This role is ideal for someone passionate about supporting young people and making a meaningful difference to their lives.
Key Responsibilities\n
\n - Support pupils aged 7-14 on a 1:1 basis and in small groups throughout the school day.
\n - Build positive and trusting relationships with pupils to encourage engagement and participation.
\n - Support teaching staff in delivering tailored learning activities across the curriculum.
\n - Assist pupils with emotional regulation and development of positive coping strategies.
\n - Promote a positive, safe, and inclusive learning environment.
\n - Implement behaviour support plans and restorative approaches.
\n - Support pupils with social skills, communication, and relationship building.
\n - Encourage confidence, resilience, independence, and self-esteem.
\n - Monitor, record, and report on pupil progress, behaviour, and wellbeing.
\n - Support pupils during lessons, breaktimes, off-site activities, and enrichment opportunities.

Requirements\n
\n - Experience working with children or young people in education, youth work, mentoring, coaching, residential care, support work, or similar settings.
\n - A genuine passion for supporting children with SEMH and additional needs.
\n - Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
\n - Ability to engage and motivate pupils who may be disengaged from education.
\n - A resilient, patient, and adaptable approach.
\n - Strong organisational skills and willingness to learn.
\n - Ability to build professional and positive relationships with pupils and colleagues.
\n - Commitment to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people.

Desirable\n
\n - Previous experience working within an SEMH, SEND, specialist school, or alternative provision setting.
\n - Experience supporting pupils with ASC, ADHD, attachment needs, or trauma-related behaviours.
\n - Knowledge of behaviour management and de-escalation strategies.
\n - Understanding of trauma-informed practice.
\n - Experience supporting pupils with EHCPs.
\n - Team Teach or equivalent training.
\n - Qualification in Education, Psychology, Youth Work, Health & Social Care, or a related field.
\n - Interest in progressing into teaching, educational psychology, counselling, therapy, or pastoral support.
